Purchase help: T60p versus T61

#1 Post by kim-chee-san » Wed Mar 26, 2008 3:04 pm

Hi all - I'm considering the two Thinkpads below with the specs. listed:

T60p
-Core 2 Duo T5600 @ 1.83 GHz
-14" SVGA+ (1400 x 1050)
-ATI Radeon X1300 discrete graphics
-2GB 667 MHz memory
-60GB HDD
-DVD-ROM (Yes, DVD-ROM, not DVD/CD-RW...which I thought was a little lame)
-Vista Business
-Integrated Bluetooth
-1 year warranty

T61
-Core 2 Duo T7250 @ 2.0 GHz
-14" WXGA with built-in camera (widescreen, 1280 x 800)
-Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics
-1GB 667 MHz memory
-60GB HDD
-DVD/CD-RW
-Vista Home Premium
-Integrated Bluetooth
-3 year warranty

I'm leaning toward the T61 because of the longer warranty and because I'm assuming they've worked out any kinks that might have afflicted the T60. But, I do really like the SVGA+ screen of the T60p.

I've owned a T42 and a T43, but don't know much about the T6x series, so hopefully you all can help me make an informed decision. Thanks.

I'd honestly get the t60p... the display is better, the gpu is an order of magnitude superior...

trade off is you are capped at 3gb of ram, and no peryn cpu possible.. but if you are looking at those specific configs to begin with, I don't think that is too big of an issue.

Don't worry about "kinks that might have afflicted the T60", because it's one of the best Thinkpads ever made.

I like the T60p's specs more, especially its higher-res screen. I couldn't care less about the lack of a CD or DVD burner because I always prefer to burn discs on a desktop computer anyway (desktop drives are faster and cheaper to replace if they get broken). Also, the widescreen T61 looks disgusting -- I strongly urge you to see one in person to decide whether or not its ugly appearance bothers you. However, the T61 has three times as much warranty, making this a tough decision. How much do they cost? If the T60p is cheaper, get it. Otherwise, get the T61.

Yea, this comes down to price. And whether you prefer wide. Optical and RAM are easily upgraded!

Thanks for the input. I realy appreciate it.

The price difference is only $100--the T60p being $100 more than the T61. With that in mind and the specs. listed, do you guys think that the T60p is worth spending an extra $100 on?

What are the exact prices? Are you sure you can't get a T61p at a similar price? They're not that expensive.

If you can tell me where to get a T61p for $700 I'll go for it. :D

T60p with an X1300? Never heard of such a config, neither the 60 GB HDD or DVD-ROM.
Sounds like a (on purpose) mislabeled T60 :)
What is the exact model number of it - in the format XXXX-XXX?

You're definitely right. Initially, I felt a bit dubious about this actually being a "p" model from some of the specs, like the 1.83 GHz processor and DVD only optical drive--but I could only assume that the seller ordered the most basic "p" model. The seller provided me with the model # (2316-CTO) which didn't help much.

I asked the seller what speed the harddrive was and he said it was a 5,400 RPM drive. At that point I was 99% sure it couldn't be a "p" model--and with the info. Troels provided that boosted it to 99.99% certainty.

I went to the Lenovo website and looked through every single 2316 "p" model (I can sometimes get a little OCD) and sure enough none came with the ATI Radeon X1300 chip--however, it was an option for the regular T60s.

Well, before I could call the seller out on his lie (or maybe innocent mistake) he had taken the ad down. It's back up now but listed as a T60--I guess someone beat me to the punch.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

believe it or not.....

when i bought my t60 from lenovo's website, i did have the option of picking x1300 with 64 mb ram . i picked x1400 with 128 so i can run vista.

so yeah, i can confirm that this is legit

i remeber this because i had to do all the research about vista and aero

It's legit for T60 but not for T60p.
