Using T43 Recovery Discs on T42

#1 Post by themoveforward » Wed Mar 26, 2008 10:20 pm

I just bought two used IBM T42 computers. Having said that, the company I bought them from had the OS customized and thus the Create Recovery Media option was absent.

I tried using my IBM T43 recovery CDs on the laptop, and while the installation seemed to go fine in Rescue and Recovery, as soon as Rescue and Recovery is finished and the laptop tries to boot into Windows for the first time, all I get is a black screen. Nothing no HD activity at all. If I take that HD out of the T42 though and put it into the T43, it'll boot up just fine.

Is there any way to get these T42s working without having to shell out 45 bucks to IBM for the recovery discs?

I think it will never work right. The T43 has a SATA controller and an SATA-> PARA bridge. Also the T43 uses a different hardware abstraction layer (HALAACPI.DLL vs. HLACPI.DLL). You can get copies from forum members for less than IBM. Send me a pm if you are interested.
