Display influences WLAN traffic?

#1 Post by beGi » Thu Mar 27, 2008 12:59 pm

Recently I've noticed that in certain conditions my display has influence on WLAN utilization. To be more specific, in condition when WLAN AP signal is (very) low and display turns itself off (due to power saving) WLAN connection works flawless, but when display turns on again, connection bandwidth drops drastically (more than 50%). I have IPW3945abg and WinXP SP2. Did anyone had similar experiences? Any suggestions and comments are welcomed. Thanks.

I haven't used that card, but I presume that it has an lcd mounted antenna. Perhaps that inducts a current in the antenna and screws it up? I would be some pretty weird physics though... I just can't imagine it happening on other cards and people not noticing.

Almost all Thinkpads have the wireless antennae in the display lid.

Yes, it has antenna in display lid, I knew that..... I've noticed the drop only when torrent client is active (traffic graph indicated the problem), didn't notice on other occasions... I know it weird, but it's a bit frustrating.... I installed several different driver ver., but no improvement....

I came to similar conclusion, but that isn't my area of expertise so i decided to post here, maybe someone knows something about it......

The LCD cable is using a highspeed signaling called LVDS. It is possible that it interferes with the WAN antenna since the WAN antenna is receiving a relatively weak signal around 2Ghz. I am using an EVDO PCCard for Sprint and it works ok.
