T61 15.4" LCD quality

#1 Post by Luftwaffle » Fri Mar 28, 2008 5:14 pm

Hey, I'm about to purchase a 15.4" T61 with the WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen. I've searched around but been unable to find out much about how the screen quality is (viewing angles, backlight bleed, etc.) on them. Anyone here have any first-hand experience they want to share?

Yepp, i'm sitting in front of my t61p wsxga+. it's a samsung panel.

read the following cons (compared to my t60p wsxga+ lg panel)

- bad viewing angles (especially hori.)
- huge backlight bleed from the bottom
- graininess

overall, i am pleased with the t61p, so i keep it ;-)

btw: my old t42 sxga+ screen looks terrible (comp. w the wsxga+ screen).

I have a samsung on my non wide 14.1 T61p. It has no backlight bleed, is very bright, no bad pixels, colors are not bad after changing the color profile, viewing angles are not great but not terrible for this type of laptop screen, but there is a bit more graininess than I would ideally like. Overall, it is not bad, but I would like to have the option to pay more for a better display.

I'm happy with the 2 new T61 notebooks received last week; both with LG 1680x1050 panels. No dead pixels, bright and with good contrast. Viewing angles better than my 2 year old dell 9300 17" WUXGA samsung panel.

A tiny amount of backlight bleed on the bottom (not an issue at all), and much less bleed than my dell 9300.

I don't know who manufactured my panel, but it's whatever they had for the 1680x1050 this month.

Contrast, brightness, and viewing angles are all good. Haven't noticed any bad (sub)pixels.

The color balance is very much too blue (I'm guessing it could even be past 9,000K). Makes sRGB look accurate. But it's not like I'm going to be doing color correcting on it (at least not by eye). I was unable to easily fix it with the NVIDIA controls, so I'll wait until I get around to reinstalling Adobe Creative Suite and try that Adobe Gamma control panel. This is not a problem for my primary use (web application development).

I often use it as a secondary monitor (docked) and I like the ability to turn the backlighting down very low.

There is a way on the lenovo website to put in your system serial number and it will show you all the part numbers used in your build. Then search on that part number and it will show you a page where you can see the manufacturer of the parts.

I have the LG LCD's and the Chicony keyboards.

Here is a link, but the lenovo website is really slow this morning and my previously saved link is timing out.

on the native resolution of 1680x1050, mine 15" screen (I do not know the make) has bad angles. Even moving of head within 10 cm area in front of it gives noticeable change of light in different areas of the screen.
If I knew this, I'd definitely go with 'normal' 14" 4:3 screen even with smaller resolution... This 'wide' screen has more disadvantages rather than advantages :( I'd prefer smaller case too.

Yes, the viewing angles on my 15.4" 1680x1050 LG could be better and the colors are a bit muted compared to a desktop LCD. However, the T61 14" 4:3 has lower contrast and lower brightness. Something to check out.
