T43 RAM Upgrade issue

#1 Post by kookaburra » Sat Mar 29, 2008 3:19 am

Well, the price is going down all the time.

I want to upgrade 512MB+1G to 1G+1G or 2G+1G.

But I know the intel chip on T43 officially only support 2G Maximun.

So does any one can tell me what will happen if I install more than 2G? Thx.

====================

I searched but didn't find the experiment result. :o

There's a thread on doing it with the X41.

I'm pretty sure a 2GB stick will work by itself, it's whether a second stick will be detected.

Officially the max is 2x1GB.

I believe there were reports on this forum of people getting the unit to detect 2.5GiB of RAM, but no more. (the official maximum is 2GiB). Maybe someone can help provide you a link if your searching is not fruitful.

The maximum amount of memory the chipset can use is 2GB. So even if 2.5GB is detected (either in BIOS or in XP/Linux/Whatever), it won't be any faster than 2GB.

If I were you, I would use one single 2GB stick (PC2-5300 CL5 or above if you want a Lenovo-branded memory, it will work like a PC2-4200) and leave one slot empty.

You will get slight performance improvements (near imperceptible unless you're running the right multimedia apps) if you combine two identical 1 GB sticks. Dual channel memory is a feature the T43. :)

I run that and I'm quite happy with the performance.
2668-75U T43, 2GB RAM, 2nd hand NMB kybd, Dock II, spare Mini-Dock, and spare Port Replicators. Wacom BT tablet. Ultrabay 2nd HDD.
2672-KBU X32, 1.5GB RAM, 7200 rpm TravelStar HDD.

May I ask if identical here means memory sticks of the same type (eg: PC2-4200) or of the same brand?

I heard different Windows Experience Index scores were obtained while using different combination of memory modules of different brands.
