fingerprint reader drivers?
It's well known that Windows update will not allow you to install SP1 if you have certain drivers on your system because of troubles with them. You have to get update versions before SP1 will install from Windows Update.

read there... if it's the fingerprint driver then you have to get the newest version from UPTEK
I forget the link right now but it should be like version 1.9.2.111 (google or forum search for that version, you'll find
)

Not that it helps me, since I have one of the non-compatible language packs installed, but the updated driver from Upek is available here. Many people over at notebookreview forums have had success downloading SP1 onto their ThinkPads with that driver installed.

I received this e-mail from Microsoft...I doubt that this is a best way to resolve the problem. If there is something that SP1 does not like, there will be problems after I restart the computer.

Dear Bill,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Update Support. My name is Frank, and I am glad to work with you. For your reference, the case ID for this service request is SRX1062862523. You can contact me directly by sending an email to (removed)@mssupport.microsoft.com with the case ID in the subject line.
I would like to apologize for the delay in responding to your support request. Please be assured that you have successfully contacted the correct support team and I will be working with you to address your concerns as quickly as possible.
From the problem description, I understand that Windows Vista Service Pack 1 can’t be checked and downloaded properly on system by Automatic Update. Please feel free to let me know if I misunderstood.
I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to resolve the issue.
Generally, this type of installation issue can occur if certain third party programs are running in the background during the upgrade. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (McAfee, Norton, etc.), I recommend temporarily disabling or shutting them down during the troubleshooting process. Please be sure to re-enable them once the process has completed.
Before we try to install Windows Vista SP1, please refer to the following article first:
Things to Know Before You Download Windows Vista SP1
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... 68895.aspx
Installing SP1 requires a minimum of 5 GB free disk space on the Windows partition. The recommended free disk space is as follows:
• 7 GB Recommended for 32-bit Windows Vista
• 12 GB Recommended for 64-bit Windows Vista
If your original system is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) version preinstalled in the computer, I recommend contacting the computer manufacturer before installing Windows Vista SP1. Please ask them if any of the software applications and hardware drivers need to be updated for Vista SP1. Otherwise, installing Vista SP1 may cause unexpected problems.
The installation may take more than 45 minutes, depending on the system. The system will reboot several times during the installation. Please do not turn off the power manually. If we are using a laptop, please connect it to the AC Power Adapter.
After that, I recommend downloading Windows Vista Service Pack 1 in Normal Mode and installing it in Clean Boot Mode. Please follow the steps below.
Step 1: Download Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer
===================================================
1. Download Windows Vista SP1 from the link below according to your System Type:
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista 32-bit (Size: 434.5MB)
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista 64-bit (Size: 726.5MB)
2. Please save it on the Desktop.
Step 2: Install Windows Vista SP1 in Clean Boot mode
========================================
Please disable all startup items and third party services when booting to avoid conflict when installing Vista SP1:
1. Click "Start", type: MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter.
Note: Please click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" window pops up.
2. Click "Services", check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3. Click "Startup", click "Disable All" and click "OK".
Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We can manually run these programs later.
4. Please double click the downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer and follow the instructions to install Windows Vista SP1.
To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the computer.
If the issue persists, please collect a screenshot of the error message, the latest System Information, and the CBS.log for further research. Please be sure that the information does not contain any of your confidential and private information. It’s for troubleshooting purposes only. Thank you for understanding.
How to capture a Screenshot
======================
1. When the error appears, please press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.
2. Click "Start", point to "All Programs", point to "Accessories" and then click "Paint".
3. In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save". The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: screenshot.
Note: Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box. Save the screenshot file to your Desktop.
System Information
==============
The System Information can provide us with more information about the current status of the system. I would like to check it for you. Please send it to me using the following steps:
1. Click "Start", type "MSINFO32" in the Search Bar and press Enter to start the System Information.
2. On the popup window, on the menu bar, click "File", and click "Save", type a file name and then choose NFO as "Save as type", click “Desktop” on the left pane, and click Save.
3. Right-click on the exported file, choose "Send To" -> "Compressed (zipped) Folder".
Collect CBS.log
===========
1. Please click "Start", double click to open Local Disk C:, browse to the "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS" folder, right click on CBS.log and choose "Copy".
2. Right click on the free space of Desktop, choose "Paste".
When the User Account dialog box pops up, please click "Continue" if necessary.
3. Right-click on CBS.log on the desktop, choose "Send To" -> "Compressed (zipped) Folder".
Please send these zip files to (removed)@mssupport.microsoft.com.
Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending on the email application being used. While you are composing the email, most applications will provide you with either an "Attach" button or a Paper Clip Icon to click in order to attach a file. After clicking this button/icon you must browse to the file you wish to attach and select it by either double clicking it or clicking it once and then clicking the "Attach" button.
After obtaining the information, I will research it and get back to you as soon as possible. Please take your time with the steps and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If there are any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.
I look forward to your reply.
Best Regards,
Frank

I don't think your laptop has an integrated video board...my guess is that is the culprit. My ATI based PC worked fine. My two Intel integrated video laptops will not download. I even did a clean install on the X60s and that did nothing.
Lenovo is silent about the upgrade. Does anyone have any contacts?
Thanks, Bill

Here is the official Microsoft reply:
Dear Bill,
Thank you for your reply. From your last Email, I understand that you would like to wait Lenovo to come out some kind of fix.
Please be assured that our developers will work closely with OEM to resolve the issue as soon as we can. However, since a third-party is involved with this issue, it may take us some time to communicate with them and find the root cause involved. Your time and patience are greatly appreciated.
Since the operating system and applications on your computer are highly customized by the original computer manufacturer, the standard version of the latest service pack may not be fully compatible with the computer system at present. Usually, they will publish a compatibility patch or installation guide for these service packs. Since SP1 (Service Pack 1) was released recently, I would like to suggest contacting the original manufacturer of the computer or the hardware device. Please request installation guides for Windows Vista SP1. If they do not suggest installing SP1 on the computer at present, please delay the update.
Based on the state of the case, I will close it.
If you have any questions regarding this issue, please don't hesitate to let me know. To respond, feel free to write to me at with the case ID in the subject line.
It is my pleasure to work with you. I look forward to hearing from you.

Interesting thread.
I own an X61s with Vista Ultimate. I was not offered to upgrade to SP1 yet via windows update or Thinkvantage system update.
If I understand correctly, I'd better wait until it comes on its own.
This situation is really pathetic as I just tried to copy a 4.5 MB song from a NAS to my laptop which hung the machine. It's incredible to see that an OS is not capable of making a file copy despite the effort that went into it. Luckily I have ssh installed and could find a workaround for my simple task.
I'll keep waiting on that SP1 then...
