Size of 9 cell battery in T61

#1 Post by dai » Sun Mar 30, 2008 3:10 am

I just ordered my first ThinkPad, T61, about a week ago and I'm waiting on it. Meanwhile, I'm thinking about getting a waterfield sleeve for it since those are highly praised around here.

There is a 9 cell battery available for the T61, though I hardly see it mentioned. Searching through old threads, I see most people talk about the 7 cell. Since I've only recently become interested in ThinkPads, I'm guessing the 9 cell battery for the T61 is a fairly new addition. Anyway, I know both of these batteries stick out, but my question is do they stick out the same amount? Basically, are they the same size? If so, then I will know which size sleeve to order since only the 14.1" widescreen 7 cell is listed in waterfield's size chart. They do not mention the 9 cell.

Thanks for the help.

Update: Waterfields now has the bag for the T61 14.1" widescreen with 9cell available.

On the 14" widescreens, the 4 cell is flush, the 6 cell sticks out 1" , the 7 cell sticks out 1.08", the 9 cell sticks out 1.47".

I use the waterfield cases and love their sleeves. They list your Thinkpad with the larger battery. If you have any doubt, email Gary and he or one of his people will get back to you in an our or less. I have bought 6-7 sleeves from these people and they are the very best!

Thanks Harryc, that was exactly what I needed. Greg, unless I'm mistaken, they do list the 9cell battery for the T61 14.1", but only for the nonwidescreen version. For the widescreen version, they have the 6 and 7 cell batteries listed.

I'm sure you know it will depend on how you have power management configured. I've been really impressed with the degree of control available and the information reported. Particularly that green battery icon that can show you the current draw on the battery in watts. I've seen it range from under 20 to over 40 on my T61p.

Seems to me that if you know how much power is in the battery (Power Manager reports 84.27 Wh from my 9-cell as a full charge capacity) and divide by your typical current draw (20), you should be able to compute how much time you can get from it (don't forget about any automatic shutdown at a critical level).

4h seems about right for my usage. I'm usually only undocked for short times, so I haven't really tried to reduce the current use myself. There's got to be a thread on that around here somewhere :-)

I know how it works and what change the battery life 81 Wh like T60p 9 cell brings from 4 to 5 hours.

That's why I ask battery life or power. But I prefer to know how many wh have each battery.

With the 38 wh battery from the T61, I only get about 1 1/2 hours surfing witch is very short.
