NAV Auto-Protect

#1 Post by 1ravendog » Tue Dec 07, 2004 1:05 pm

will not activate.

nor will automatic updates.

clicking away on enable to no avail.

Norton website says I might have updated windows with out re-installing NAV......well duh! I try to hit Windows update at least evey couple of weeks with no problems 'till now....was really working great.

How on earth do you reinstall NAV from the partition?

Is it only way to fix?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

How did you install NAV initially?

Uninstall and reinstall it the same way.

If the installer is in a partition (I can't see why), double click it to install.

it comes pre installed..... no install program supplied.... however, if your "trial" is almost up, it's cheaper to get new program w/media from ebay than to renew.....

Then I would think that the installer is somewhere on the preloaded CD.

Thanks for the input on this, problem is NAV was pre-installed.....no CD's, think I could re-install only NAV from the restore partition?

If NAV won't start or work (I have seen that before), then it has probably been corrupted somehow. So there are a couple of approaches:

1. On your T42, there should be a folder C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS\NORTONAV. That is the installation folder. Uninstall NAV, restart, and run SETUP from the nortonav folder. Caution. If NAV won't work, it may not uninstall (been there). There are uninstallation instructions on the Symantec Web site including removal programs (if I remember correctly). Get these instructions to uninstall completely.

2. Since it was likely corrupted, you probably should be using a firewall / intrusion detection system. Norton Internet Security (Retail) is ok, but I have seen better (Symantec Client Security Corporate for one). Whatever - pick your own poison, but upgrade to a current Anti-Virus / Firwewall / Intrusion Detection suite. Uninstall NAV as per step 1 first.

I use ZoneAlarm & PeerGuardian for personal firewalls.

thanks guys, have had zone alarm from day one.

NAV will run to do scans, just auto-protect and automatic updates are "disabled".

will try to uninstall and reinstall from the folder you mentioned, sounds like a winner.
