WinXP on a 770

#1 Post by simple1 » Fri Mar 28, 2008 11:32 pm

Well, this time it's a TP 770 - type 9549- 233MHz/128MB ram not fully recognized; no sound - and now the hard part - not on the WWW on lan only.
Latest bios - IDET38WW, 09/17/99 - very primative - dare try IBET54WW - any1 no?
device manager - ports - communications port (COM*)- banged - sometimes - audio device
And a number of things in sound, video, and game controllers.
I have attempted all the possible lenovo drivers with almost no success, sometimes I get sound as it restarts, in order to install the drivers, once I got sound starting up.
I'm trying to use this laptop on my lan as an audio player at the stereo amp and NO SOUND is not good.
WinXP, stripped down, runs very well on this old machine - lan works very well too. Excellent video.

simple1,

What are you installing xp pro sp2 or just xp pro? Another thing you need to install system update from here.

It will get you the drivers you need.

System update v3.13 is not supported for our old TP's. It will give you some of them recommended updates for power management and accessories but thats it. I just went thru this last night with my T21. Go to the driver matrix and d/l them individual and manually.

Cmarti,
XP Pro SP1, stripped down - no browser, no OE, & no WMP. Runs GREAT! Not worried about security or updates etc... This box only sees the lan.

Vanaya,
You are right. The battery MaxiMizer works. Personalization utility data diskette and Configuration utility will not install without phoning home. Niether will the Windows XP supplement file diskette. I have tried almost all the drivers for almost all OSs from the same matrix you suggested.

I have disabled the infrared. Is there a way to force the right driver for the infrared and there by free up the driver infrared is currently using which might be used for the communications port (COM2). I CAN'T get rid of the bang on the communications port!!
Or am I barking up the wrong tree.

By-the-way, I guess the os does see the 128mbs plus 32mbs(on board) = 160MB

Sorry, I meant XP Pro SP2.
I think my biggest problem is the communication port in device manager - yellow !

I have loaded the 600 in my signature with xpp no problems. So let me re-attach the keyboard I borrowed from it and fire it up.

Sorry was to quick to post. You are working on 770 not 600. So I can't verify the drivers. What model do you have 770/e/ed/x/z?

Got an parts kb for T20 - missing f1,h.j. and . keys. You can have it if you need it or a key. Don't know if it fits the 600.

770 Type 9549 233mHz/128mb It is multimedia with dolby, video, surround sound, tv etc. Which I can't get running or ANY sound. The ibm DVD decoder card is not banged. Crystal Semiconductor cs423x plug and play, crystal wdm audio codec, and crystal wdm mpu-401 compatable, all are banged.

The driver matrix states that is included in w2k os, but I read you are using xp.

Did a quick Google and found them at soundcard-drivers,com (didn't want link). The file name is tpafkq2k.exe. Then I did a search at lenovo website and found that they are compatible with the I-series thinkpads. Might work as you don't have w2k disks.

Absolutely not. I can't find the product number you provided above (9540-1AU), but if it is a plain vanilla 770 (and not a 770X or 770Z), then the IDET38WW is the latest BIOS and you should not under any circumstances try to update the BIOS for that machine with a BIOS from a different model of 770.

Are you sure that your model number is not 9549-something?

First of all, I'd like to thank whoever the moderator is that gave me my own thread; I'll strive to deserve it.

Secondly, Yes, it is a plain vanilla 770 (and not a 770X or 770Z), TYPE 9549-1AU.

I am very frustrated; I tried tpafkq2k.exe as vanaya suggested. I then tried 3 or 4 drivers at driverguide. Nothing cleaned up device manager, though I had sound at shut down and start up.

The last driver I tried - CS4232orCS32-3DI.zip at "http://members.driverguide.com/driver/d ... verid=8948"
caused the computer not to restart the os; and I can niether get into bios, nor boot from floppy or cdrom. Instead of the beep at the end of bios check I get a low grunt and seems the os fails to load before the bootable source gets a chance. The speaker icon above the keyboard is allways flashing.

HELP - any ideas?
I don't mind reloading probably w2k this time ...BUT HOW?

Well it booted right back to xp; more or less the same old problems - under ports/communication port (COM2), under sound, video and game controllers/audio device, crystal wdm MPU-401 compatable - this time. Mt Everest claimed crystal wdm mpu-401, but didn't add the 'compatable'; Belarc couldn't open and may have caused the crash after uninstall. I still don't have a cs**** number for the onboard sound card on this mb. Numerous times during the drivers install, I've run into the windows file protection warning wether to replace my newly installed files with ones on the install cd or keep the unrecognized versions. I have tried both options; anyone know what to do here?

At this time I do have the default windows sounds and default device under settings IS crystal wdm audio. I don't know if I can play a cd etc... because I have not installed a player.

I wish to install iTunes for reasons not related to me (Wife, Kids, Macs, and the server is an old G4) on less than 1/2 the minimal requirements, but winamp will do and I prefer it.

So. should I just disable the offending items in device manager and hope it won't matter, continue to force drivers not knowing what card I actually have onboard, reformat in fat 16 thinking it would be faster on this 5gb 52 rpm ata33 drive and might avoid windows file protection thing? OR install w2k because it is not supposed to have this audio problem in the first place?
