PrivateDisk without Client Security Solution (or prompts)?

Hello there,

Can I use PrivateDisk without Client Security Solution? Any reason I wouldn't want to?

I've been reading others' opinions that Client Security Solution (CSS) is essentially a glorified password manager. Even through the documentation I've been able to find so far (including its own help), I'm not 100% clear on what it does. If it really is just the password manager, then I don't need it -- I have an encrypted password database of my own that does what I need.

I don't have the fingerprint reader on my X60, either.

However, it looks like the "PrivateDisk" functionality, which I think I want, is only available through Client Security Solution. Is there another way to achieve it, particularly mapping a drive letter to an encrypted and password-protected file storage block? I can't find another way to launch PrivateDisk.

Mainly, I don't want to be prompted for my password an additional two times every time Windows starts. Argh. If disabling CSS could also speed up the machine, particularly startup time, that would be a lovely bonus.

The only documents I've found basically sound mainly like marketing-speak. I only have a vague idea what the embedded security chip does (store a password?).

Also, are there any implications with trying to, for example, take my hard drive out and use it in an external enclosure (if I upgrade the internal HD), or if I were to use the HD with another machine?
