How to test the write ability of a CD drive?

#1 Post by jwriter » Sun Mar 30, 2008 8:55 pm

I think, but I'm not sure, that I bought a machine that has CD writing disabled. What is the easiest way to test this? Sorry, I am new to this platform. This for a T30 with removable drive is 27L4351, which is marked "DVD". Is there a Windows utility or do I have to load 3rd party software? The drive reads correctly but I am having trouble writing. Thanks.

Looking online for that part number (27L4351), it seems to say that the drive is a plain DVD reader. It is not possible to write either a CD or a DVD on that drive no matter what software you load on the system :) .

For a CD writer, they will normally be identified with a CDRW symbol (CD Re-writable; no DVD support) or CDRW/DVD (CD Re-writable and DVD reader).

I have been looking all over for a DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo drive for this T30. Thinkwiki says it was an option for T30, so can anybody tell me... 1) What is the part number to search for and 2) What is the difference between Ultrabay Plus and Ultrabay 2000 and can I use either? Thanks.

OK, I think I found the part numbers. There are several drives: Combo I or II or III. For anybody who needs the numbers, they are...

* combo I - 08K9572

CD-ROM Read Speed: 24 X (CD,CD-R)
CD Write Speed: 4 X (CD,CD-R)

* combo II - Marketing PN: 08K9701
FRU PN: 08K9694 (Toshiba), 08K9785 (TEAC)

Write Speed 8x
Read Speed 24x (CD) / 8x (DVD)

* combo III - Marketing PN: 22P6980
FRU PN: 08K9820 (Hitachi)

Write Speed 16x
Read Speed 24x (CD) / 8x (DVD)

These all appear to work with a T30. This might help somebody, if you ever need to look on ebay.
