Bigger resolution screen to T41

#1 Post by SupaFIN » Sun Mar 30, 2008 11:54 pm

Hi,
Is it possible to swap SXGA+ resolution screen to my thinkpad which has normal XGA screen? Will it work? Is there limitation due GPU?
Thanks!

Welcome!

You can get the FRU#'s from here: 14.1inch LCD service parts - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p

And there is no limitation you can use your GPU.

Alternatively, there are people with 1400x1050 T41's who find the resolution too high and would like to downgrade to 1024x768. See if you can find one of these people and swap with them. I think two people on this forum did this not too long ago.

Re: SXGA on T41

I have done this with two T41s I'm using for various things. Absolutely no problems.

Also, I have a few for sale if you are interested. I got a lot of brand new SXGAs. I've tested them all -- They look great. I've sold one to BrianGig on the forum (I think he posted feedback) .. $160 shipped to anyplace in the US.

PM me if you are interested.

Thanks for answers and sorry for my late reply. I have been looking SXGA screens from ebay and in this item seller says that SXGA screen wont work with radeon 7500 GPU, is that right?
For some reason ThinkPad's that came with ATi Radeon 7500 and Intel 900 video chips don't work with high-resolution screens like this - they produce a lot of digital noise or do not show any image at all
In fact there was never a ThinkPad laptop released that had a combination of either one of those two graphics chips and a high resolution SXGA+ [1400x1050] or UXGA [1600x1200] screen (14" or 15" LCD size) - do not try to prove IBM/Lenovo wrong, won't work
So how it is in reality? Does someone have radeon 7500 chip and SXGA resolution screen? Is there going to be "digital noise" in picture? :?

Likely that is rare. This message is typed on a A31 with 7500 driving a UXGA LCD.

I didn't search yet for an answer but if I had to guess.. the resolution on a sxga will be lower on a 7500. From what I've seen, the standard video, or the 7500 only had XGA screens. The ATI 9000+ chips have the SXGA and higher.

If I had to guess, possible scenarios are:
1. LCD won't work
2. Will work in a lower ressolution
3. Won't be able to set 32bit

I learned last year on this forum that the 7500 GPU will, indeed, work with a SXGA screen just fine. The diver resolution will need to be set to the native resolution of the SXGA panel but it works. There may be a couple of specific examples where individual screens didn't work for some (unknown) reason. So there's a small risk but if you search back through this forum (yes, I know that's a tedious process) you'll find numerous successful transplants.

A 7500 with 32Megs shouldn't have a problem running such a screen. My T42 is connected right now to a 1680x1050 32bpp screen.

I have successfully done many transplants and seen no 'digital noise' problem. I've been using two of those transplants for weeks and seen no bad effects.

If you are interested, I do have some brand new SXGA 14" screens for sale - haven't really started advertising yet because I've been pretty busy. $160 shipped with SXGA cable and inverter.

Thanks.

@BobA

Just out of curiosity, how much would the shipment to Europe cost, particularly to Germany? Thanks.

I think shipping to Germany would be another $15-$20 USD. PM me if you like.

First time i tried with normal cable and inverter and as you have seen from the picture, it was not working. Doing that left me with only wireless lan light :( . All other lights gone.

I ordered a sxga cable from ebay 91P6787, as it says in the parts info that inverter is the same one. It did not work.

Then I went little bit extreme. Though I was not sure what type of screen Toshiba was I went for 93P4161 (ips inverter for 15") and 91P6857 (sxga cable).

I received the items yesterday and connected and hoo la la its works. Finally. :D

However, as the cable and inverter is for 15" they do not match  . The cable is smaller and fatter than normal t4X, inverter is smaller and screw holes are in different places.

Now none of my leds are working because it does not match up. My thinklight is not working because it’s too small to reach that far. And as the cable is fat i had to struggle to put it inside the casing.

However, the most important thing its working. :D

Though I don’t understand why ibm haven’t got an IPS inverter and cable for 14" 4:3 casing, as these are the machine which is popular. :!:

If anyone knows any fru for 4:3 casing do let me inform.

Tahsan,
Just out of interest - did the connector LCD connector on the Toshiba screen match exactly with the 14.1" SXGA+ cable (91P6787), or did you notice if the pins inside or on the cable didn't line up exactly?

I think its not perfect match. I think think pads cable got some side notch which was little bigger than my screen or may be my mistake, i manage to break it  but after that it connects swiftly.

but really really I am missing my lights and think light.

If you check this picture (I know picture is not very good) you can see that the cable is not straight

but screen is working

Hello everyone!

I'm just writing here, first of all to thank all the people who contributes to the site. It has been very helpful everything I have read here. So to give back a bit too, I want to report on my successful replacement of the 14.1 inches XGA screen in my IBM t42 with a SXGA+ screen.

The screen (which I bought from BobA, and it was really a pleasure doing business with him) works great in the computer, using the radeon mobility 7500 from the T42, even connecting an external monitor on the DVI from the docking station at 1280x1024.

Well, if you want to see how it went, go here and enjoy it :-)
