T42 running slow
T42 running slow
I have a T42 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM and since the last week it seems it have became a little slower, especially when I'm doing memory consuming stuff. I have checked task manager but can't see any unnormal activity.
Is there anything specific on these machines I should be aware off?

Run a mem test? See if your ram is going bad.. maybe the HD? I'd check to see how those are operating first. Since you said you checked taskman and nothing has changed it could be the hd?dynaflux wrote:I have a T42 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM and since the last week it seems it have became a little slower, especially when I'm doing memory consuming stuff. My T43 came with PC Doctor or some such, a complete diagnostic tool. IBM/Lenovo has provided updates, too. Check for that on your Start Menu?

* Have you tried to update your antivirus software and run system scan?dynaflux wrote:I have a T42 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM and since the last week it seems it have became a little slower, especially when I'm doing memory consuming stuff. I have checked task manager but can't see any unnormal activity.

Your problem could be caused by malware program,
consuming too much memory/CPU time
(it can be hidden from Task Manager)
*You have to defragment hard drive from time to time
(once per month?) or use 3-rd party defrag program with scheduler feature.
*Check how much free disk space do you have on your drive -
Windows will slow down in case you have less that 20%
of the free space.
* In case of no luck, you can try to use System Restore
and revert back to working system configuration.

dynaflux,
Things I'd verify :
1. Running programs in background (w/task manager). Make sure your PC is basically idle (just doing your stuff) when you feel it 'sluggish'.
2. Processor speed. Make sure it has not degraded. This can be because of 2 things :
- Incorrect power management mode
- Processor throttling due to very high temps (maybe broken fan or similar).
NHC is a good program to verify this.
3. Memory consumption.. Just in case your system is paging.. make sure you have free memory.
4. Some times wrongly installed bluetooth or non existent lan connections can cause the impression that system is sluggish. Make sure all shares have been disconnected and that bluetooth / wireless is disconnected (.. or connected, try the opposite of what you have now)
5. Make sure video is running OK. You can run dxdiag or similar. Sometimes a misconfigured agp or video driver can also seem like making the system sluggish.
6. If you suspect something 'hardware', try safe mode.
... these were just a few ideas.
