Model Number Not Known to Lenovo

#1 Post by ArtShapiro » Mon Mar 31, 2008 12:22 pm

I'm the happy new owner of an X61, which thanks to some help on these forums is now stable and working well.

Interestingly, the model (7675-CTR) isn't recognized for driver updates or other parts of the Lenovo site which deal with specific models. This isn't a show stopper, given that plain old 7675 has been fine, but I find it curious at best.

Could this possibly be because refurbished products from the Outlet might be tagged with different model numbers than the norm?

I thought there used to be a "detect my model number automatically" facility on the older IBM site, but I haven't stumbled on it at the Lenovo site.

Anyway, I feel somewhat between a pariah and an unperson. Is this a "grin and bear it" problem or do I have some means of having this model blessed by the Lenovo site?

Interesting. Given that user-configured models are given a "CTO" suffix on the machine type numbers, I can guess what the "R" in "CTR" might stand for... what does the sticker on the bottom of the laptop say?

As your system is a factory refurb, there is a possibility that the system board has been replaced, but the tech forgot to re-set the machine type and serial numbers in the BIOS to the correct values. I bought a refurb machine from IBM a couple of years ago that was like this; the sticker on the bottom of the machine was correct, but the matching BIOS data was not set, and had some weird default value.

I was able to set the values to their correct information with the use of a Hardware Maintenance Diskette and USB floppy drive.

The sticker says 7675-CTR.

I guess I could reset it, as you observe, but to what?

I got my X61T refurbished from the outlet. Model number is 7764-CTR. It's the same as 7764-CTO; the R means the unit has been refurbished. Yours would be 7675-CTO, but since it's refurbished it shipped as "CTR".

As further proof of this before my warranty was updated when I typed the first 4 digits of the machine type plus my serial number into warranty lookup it showed my machine as "7764-CTO". Now that my warranty is OK it shows as "7764-CTR". Do a warranty lookup and check to see what your machine shows up as.
Current: T430
Past: T42 | T60 | T61 | X61T | T410

Thanks - that makes sense to me. The warranty still hasn't appeared; as I posted in another thread it's shown as expiring on the ship date (3/20), and Lenovo asserts that the warranty status should magically update in a few more days.
