X61T questions on RAM and SDHC card

#1 Post by zephyr » Mon Mar 31, 2008 3:06 pm

I have an X61T tablet with Vista Business 32-bit. It currently has 1GB of RAM. Questions:

1. I'd like to use up to 4GB of RAM. I'm aware the BIOS is locked to 3GB and 32-bit Vista is limited to 3.5GB of RAM. But am I correct in assuming that the BIOS will eventually be unlocked by Lenovo and Vista 64-bit will support 4GB of RAM?

2. If I instead go with 3GB, will I see any adverse performance problem with a combination of a 1GB and a 2GB stick (as opposed to same sized sticks)?

3. Is this a good product? G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300), CL 5-5-5-15.

Is there any benefit of running 800 MHz RAM instead of 667 MHz?

4. Can the X61T use SDHC (secure digital high capacity) memory cards? I'd like to use an 8GB card to store mp3s. I'm assuming reading the card will draw less power than reading from the hard drive.

1) Vista 64-bit currently supports 4 GB of RAM.

2) The difference is too small to be noticeable in almost all situations.

3) Looks good. When used in current systems there is no difference between 800 & 667 MHz RAM; I believe there's a bottleneck elsewhere that prevents any benefits. Google this to double-check.

4) Pretty sure yes on this one. In fact, almost positive.

your system should support up to 8GB of RAM total. Lenovo doesn't have to do anything about the 4GB now tho, just install Vista 64bit and you'll see and use all 4GB of RAM. It's a limitation of the design of 32bit software that's why 64bit doesn't have these issues.
