Help! My laptop is overheating, and I think my fan is broken

My laptop had a small fall yesterday, and everything seemed to be fine, but now my laptop is extremely hot from below (too hot to touch for too long), and it doesn't seem like my fan is working (it usually keeps everything cool. My CPU usage is also 100% for some reason, and I have 41% battery life but only 29 minutes remaining.

What's going on? What should I do?

I know very little about laptop hardware and such -- but my advice to you would be to keep the laptop off untill someone more qualified than I can get back to you. Any electronic component being that hot cant be good!

Is there any way I can test to see if the fan actually is broken? It's exam week and I NEED my laptop

even if the fan is broken, it should be able to do basic tasks this week. The CPU will shut down temporarily if things get too hot for safety...

Sure, put your hand by the air vents and see if you feel any air coming out. The fan never actually goes truly off. It just throttles down to like 800 rpm or something like that. If you don't feel any air, then you know you have a problem.

When you turn on the laptop from off (not wake from sleep), the fan revs up really high as the BIOS does a fan test. So turn on the laptop and try it. Also PC Doctor also has a fan test.

Yeah, i agree with Taphil. By simply putting your hand near the vent when its idle for instance is misleading as most of the time no air is leaving from my vents as i run on adaptive even when on AC.

You may also want to change your CPU setting to adaptive to reduce overheating until you get it checked out.
When you change your setting your CPU should throttle down to 600MHz and run about 10C cooler on normal use.

Mine was - I sent it in for repair and it is fine now.

Download MobileMeter and check the temperature. If it over 45C idle or 60C at full-bore - call IBM service.
