Part Number for English replacement keyboard on T42p?

#1 Post by DentdHalo » Tue Dec 07, 2004 5:55 pm

Im in Tokyo and have spec'd out a Japanese model thinkpad that Im going to pick up on Friday.

Only prob is I hate the Japanese keyboard layout and want to replace it with an english keyboard.

I have seen the keyboard here i Japanese stores, but they want nearly 300 dollars for it!!! UGH.

Been searching ebay but havnt seen it come up yet. What is the IBM part number so I can maybe order it online and have it delivered to my relatives place when Im back home for the holidays?

If you switch keyboards, do you need to update the BIOS or anything to reflect the new layout?

Thanks.

Just called ibm to get 08k544 replacement thai keyboard. pretty painless.
for her sake, the rep had to get me to say something was physically wrong with the keyboard, and I just told her that there is flex at the bottom right, there is a thread 150 replies long about this, not the same as keyboards as prior thinkpads owned, and I have FRU part needed (make sure you tell them this early on or they might just send you the same China keyboard all over again), and she would be happy to send it to me. Don't need to return the keyboard according to her (old one, I mean). Point is they won't understand things like the tactile feel isn't the same, it's not as velvety, etc as the thai keyboard, etc, so you have to say something that's in their trigger words vocabulary, or at least that's my impression. Sticky keys is what she kind of paraphrased for me, which is somewhat true b/c the right half of the keyboard does not feel the same as the left half, and my trackpoint buttons are somewhat loose and creaky, although I must admit it's already better than my T41. So is the fan, btw.
Anyway, we'll see if the thai keyboard fixes things a bit better. If it doesn't, oh well. At least I have an extra keyboard.
