T30 boot problem

#1 Post by peteenders » Tue Apr 01, 2008 2:45 am

Hello T30 experts! I have following boot problem with my T30. I had Ubuntu installed and had to reinstall it couple of times because HDD corrupted so badly for some reason. Finally one day T30 seemed to be dead.

Symptoms:
- After power on IBM splash screen is showed but boot won't go any futher
- If I try to enter BIOS by pressing F1, "entering bios" (or something like that) stays at the display forewer
- Same thing with F12
- No beebs
- There is only silent "crack" sound heard from the HDD at boot
- Only Z light is lighting

What I have done this far:
- Tried without battery (don't even have one...)
- Replaced CMOS backup battery, also tried without it
- If RAM memories are removed, there is beeps from POST (four I think…)
- Tried both RAM slots with only one memory installed
- Tried boot with HDD, memories, DVD removed => no luck

Is there some tricks still left? Can this be symptom of the famous and notorious RAM slot problem?

Welcome to the forum!

Try booting without the HDD. If that doesn't get you anywhere, remove the mini-PCI card and media drive and see what happens.

Good luck and let us know.

Thanks ajkula66!

I already did remove HDD and DVD and tried to boot. Mini PCI need to be still checked.

That is very weird that bios can't be entered...

Download IBM's PC Doctor, and see if you can boot from this CD (after you burned the ISO).
If you can, it will thoroughly test your T30.

In my opinion the symptoms described does indicate a memory slot problem.

Thanks guys.

I tried to boot from PC doctor CD, but unfortunately DVD might be disabled from BIOS boot order. As pressing F12 halts the system ("preparing boot device list" stays in display for good) its not possible to select DVD for booting either. The same problem is with pressing F1, "entering bios" is showed but BIOS is never opened and boot order can't be manipulated.

It might be that this machine need to put pieces to check e.g. connectors and try to build it back as soon as I have time to do it. Meanwhile, if you have any ideas to help this problem, please post. I'll let you know after I have more information.
