x31 power adapter, missed out on Lenovo deal

#1 Post by DNMonty » Tue Apr 01, 2008 2:48 pm

:( Apparently a few weeks after the outlet sale, my adapter's little yellow ringlet on the connector broke. Now i have a X31 with no power adapter. Anyone buy too many spares that thye might be willing to part with one? Or another good source since Lenovo obviously doesn't have them in the outlet anymore?

I think you will see quite a few on ebay. I suggest you try and get an IBM rather one that says "for IBM" so it's genuine. Any T2*, X3* will work, maybe others as well.

Any idea on specifically what model numbers to query?

Search for "Thinkpad Power Supply" and they will find you ;)

This search string should get you started on eBay:

(ibm,thinkpad) (4.5,4.5a,72,72w*) (ac,power,supply,adapter) -20v -90w

and then select some minimum price you are willing to pay. Note that I've specified the 72 watt adapter; you can substitute the normal 56 watt adapter by changing the "4.5" to "3.36" and "72" to "56". As mpcook suggests, if you can, take a good look at the label and see if you can see wording to the effect of "For IBM" or "Replacement for IBM". Those would be the knock-offs.

Don't get a knock off, even if the price is good. Mine stopped connecting properly after a few months.

Another reason to avoid knock-offs is safety. Typically, it will probably stay plugged into AC power for extended periods when you are not around. Not the best application for a bottom dollar Chinese knock off. Especially when you can get the real thing for $8 and change plus shipping.
