Newbie HDD question
Newbie HDD question
I have a t42 with a 40GB drive. I have run out of room to put things on the drive and have my music on an external drive, but this is becoming inconvenient. So should I just by a new 2.5" hdd that is bigger and faster or get an ultrabay adapter and put a 30GB drive in there that I already have. If I did the Ultrabay could I just use it to store my music or will it have to have its own OS and run separately. If I got the new hdd I would like to do a fresh install of windows, but I don't have certain software CDs anymore like word etc. Could I do a fresh install of windows and then somehow move some of my software, but it seems this would cause issues. Thanks
Re: Newbie HDD question
No operating system needed for the ultra bay drive. It is a handy place for files and the computer will see it as another drive.gth760x wrote:I have a t42 with a 40GB drive. On your other topic, I suggest a 3rd party imaging program to backup your entire system, and then that image can be put back down on a new drive.

Read through this thread, good tutorial about cloning a drive.
Hard Drive Cloning
Hard Drive Cloning
the ultrabay option can be just storate, no OS needed. Cloning is the best way to upgrade, relatively simple to do.
Another option is just to get an external "portable" USB drive, not the ones that needs a power adapter, get the ones that run solely off USB, these will use the same 2.5" drive. Here is one I found on BUY.com, a WD Passport Portable 320GB USB 2.0 for $135.00

The only thing I am worried about with cloning is cloning all the crap that has built up in my computer over the last several years. I figure if I do a clean install of windows it would fix a lot of my problems. However, I'm not sure I can do that since windows came installed and I do not have any disks. Also, I don't remeber if MS office came installed on this computer and I do not have the CD for it.
