Suggestions for future X6x laptops!!
Suggestions for future X6x laptops!!
- The same 12.1 inch screen with its 4 by 3 aspect ratio, but I suggest a higher resolution better than the current one.
- 2 PCMCIA slots instead of having only one.
- Include a USB DVD Drive in the package.
- Maybe future X series must weigh only 1 kg!!
- Extend memory capabilities to 8 GB RAM.
- Include Solid State Drives.
- Increase battery life.

IBM ThinkPad X61s, L7500(1.6GHz), 2GB RAM, 160GB 5400rpm HD, 12.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel X3100, Intel 802.11agn wireless, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, Intel Turbo Memory, 4c Li-Ion, WinVista Business 32
It's fortunate that you didn't include price in your suggestions, because stuffing a larger battery and a second PC Card slot (why not ExpressCard, anyway?) into a X60-sized frame while knocking the weight down by 0,5 kg is going to take some serious engineering.

Re: Suggestions for future X6x laptops!!
Screen - Agreed. I wouldn't mind a widescreen option either, so long as the bezel isn't thicker than 1cm at any point (*cough* X300 *cough).mcmanaman wrote:- The same 12.1 inch screen with its 4 by 3 aspect ratio, but I suggest a higher resolution better than the current one.

2PCMCIA Slots - Better zero, or one expresscard32 slot. I'd opt for no expansion slots of this sort ala Macbook air, since this is a slot I only ever used on my 5 year old Inspiron 4100 to extend it to wireless and then USB 2.0 capabilities. The slot is, effectively, useless in its current state and sacrificing it for, say, discrete graphics would be acceptable.
USB DVD Drive - I haven't used a DVD drive for years, and part of keeping costs low with the X series is the very fact that they don't include a DVD Drive. While this would be a nice option, I see no need for it to become standard.
Weight - little by little it's going down. I don't mind the 2.9lbs with the X61s. Any lighter seems... unnecessary.
The Santa Rosa platform can officially support 8GB of RAM, but there are only 2GB Sticks on the market so far, ergo the current "limit" of 4GB.
SSD - Good idea, but as an option only for the time being. Price is an issue here.
Battery life - That's a given. With each new rendition of the Intel platform there have been batter life increases. I'd prefer to see better batteries rather than just increases in efficiency. Toshiba announced a technology within the last 6 months that would increase Li-Ion battery yield by 10x - but it was targeted to automobiles rather than laptops. Still, I dream of an 80 hour X6x

Nice suggestions from all,
- I also suggest a low voltage core 2 Duo extreme processor if available, since these processors are not a power saver at all. But I think Intel would not mind building a custom processor for Lenovo.
- Maybe include up to 6 or 12 MB L2 Cache.
- Intel Chipsets are known for their low power consumption, but I wouldn't mind a custom built Nvidia with low power consumption.
