YES, it's the old "which carrying case" thread !!!

#1 Post by aamsel » Tue Dec 07, 2004 11:16 pm

Well, looks like I am going to end up as an X31 owner!!! (everyone cheer, give me high fives, please, send up rockets, mail me cigars!!!)
My laptop decision, aka "Our Long National Nightmare" is coming to an end!!!!

Anyhow, I want a true "minimalist" bag, basically just the X31 and nothing else.

I was down to the Tom Bihn Braincell at:
http://www.tombihn.com/Merchant2/mercha ... ct_Count=0

and the Booq Powersleeve 12 at:
http://www.booqbags.com/Detail.bok?no=65

I am leaning toward the Booq Powersleeve 12.

However, are there any really nice leather bags that would just hold an X31 ??

Don't need or want a shoulder strap, just handles or under the arm preferred.

Or, are there other really nice bags, leather or otherwise, that I might not have seen for an X31 ???

YES, I HAVE READ ALL OF THE PREVIOUS "which carrying case" threads!!
I promise!!!!

OK, no need to congratulate me all at once !!!

Any X31 minimalist case recommendations that I might not have read about or thought about MORE than welcome!

Thanks,

I have just bought my first ThinkPad, an X31, second-hand but still with two years of warranty left. It came with an unused IBM-issue Targus bag and a black padded glove with a velcro flap. It has a Sony VAIO label on it but the whole thing is black so the letters are hardly noticeable. I like it very much and is as light as couple of padded paper envelopes. Mind you it could do with a discreet handle.

Correct me if I am wrong, but...
none of the current IBM/Targus cases are X series specific?
They all say that they fit "Thinkpad", i.e. all of them.

In June I ordered a small Targus Case for X-Series in USA. In Germany it wasn't available at any shop, distributor or at Targus Germany itself. Finally I found an online-shop in the USA shipping to Europe for an acceptable price: www.provantage.com

The case for the X-Series was just a small hardcover-case (folder-like) with a zipper around, similar to the new "ThinkPad X40 Office Executive Slipcase" (http://www.provantage.com/buy-7TGUS252- ... opping.htm), but without the pockets attached to the front side of the new case. It was just a case for the thinkpad itself. Unfortunately there was no possibility to carry the case exept under your arm (no handle, no strap or something like that).

But the new case is X-series specific to. I just wonder why it isn't available in Germany...

OK, please correct me if I am wrong but...

I do not consider a case that is 4.5" thick to me a "minimalist" case for a notebook that is just over 1" thick. I am thinking like 1/2" to 1" padding maximum all around.

Any others ????
Please ??????

Try this one: http://www.targus.com/us/product_detail ... ku=IBM563D. No handles though. But ok for carrying under the arms & has with pockets for the ac adapter.

These two bags have handles, but thought I would throw them in here because they look like great bags for an X40. Looks good even if one carried the X4 base. Not sure about fit with extended battery though. I think I'm going to get the North South one.

Cheers... roger

Hey...

I have the booq powersleve 12 and I am very happy with it.. I would recommend it... the frot pocket is basically useless. It holds my usb key and sometimes some knick knacs.. you can jsut fit the power brick if you are desperate enough...

Also, you can probably find it on ebay and get a deal.. I got it for 20 US with shipping :)

I’ve uploaded a photo of the laptop bag I bought for my x40 mentioned earlier in this thread. It will fit the x40 with x4 dock installed and several other items that one might want to take along for an on the road bundle. This is a tight fit, but is really just what I was wanting.

Sumdex north south bag

http://us.f2.yahoofs.com/bc/3f70d7f1_7e ... BBaPRXJzNO

http://www.ebags.com/sumdex/mt_north_so ... elid=42729

The bag has in it…

Back Zippered compartment

- Phone cord for dial up
- Plug portion of x40 charger

Main compartment

-X40 with 4 cell battery and dock installed.

Front Fold out compartment

-The 8 cell battery in back of front compartment (will put tooth brush/paste here too)

Left to right

-Pens
-X40 charger
-SE HBH-35 Bluetooth headset
-SE T68i phone

Zippered Mesh Pocket

Sandisk MobileMate USB 2.0 reader for Memory sticks
Spare Charged camera battery

Loose in fold out compartment

- Cell phone charger
- Camera (must be small like Canon SD300 or Sony DSC-T1

Another small zippered compartment on the front

- Passport fits perfectly

Probably will put wallet and toothbrush/paste loose in fold out compartment.

With the docking station this is a tight fit. I suppose one might be worried about the lid of the x40 compressed and bowed a bit. One would just have to be careful not to over stuff this thing, but that would be the case with any bag, or putting to much pressure on the lid of the x40.

Without the X4 dock there is plenty of room in the main compartment and could put in some paperwork (note that 8.5x 11 papers really don’t fit.)

I will usually not even have the docking station. If I did want to take it I’d probably just put it in my luggage along with a charger for my camera batteries.

What I really like is the very small size of this bag. I think people will be amazed that I pull a 12.1 inch computer out of it…

Cheers… Roger

Shinza ZeroShock...

#15 Post by jhoover » Sat Jan 08, 2005 2:12 pm

Dunno if its too late but I'd suggest the Shinza ZeroShock from shinza.com. I have an X40 with the extended battery and it fits (a little tight) but very nice in that sleeve. The ZeroShock is made from the same "tempurpedic" those Swedish pillows are made from and are superior to traditional foam/wetsuit material sleeves. Of course, it lacks a hard shell frame but I keep it in my backpack on top of my books and haven't had any problems yet. Note: I use the lappy everyday for class and the ZeroShock hasn't let me down yet...
