Wireless option for my T42p?

#1 Post by pointfielder » Wed Dec 08, 2004 12:17 am

Hi,
I am planning on buying the T42p (2373HTU) that comes with Intel's
Pro Wireless 802.11b card and bluetooth. I am new to Wireless options, so is this enough or should I go for one of the following (which I will need to buy separately and install myself including the BIOS changes):

1) IBM 11a/b/g Wireless CardBus Adapter: It automatically searches for the best WLAN connection. It helps provide connection flexibility and investment protection to your existing 11b WLAN installations and future access point upgrades. Tri-mode operation helps you connect and switch between a/b/g wireless LANs in your office, or if you subscribe and connect to WLANs where you travel.

2) IBM 11a/b/g Wireless Mini PCI Adapter: Designed for select wireless upgradeable ThinkPad notebooks with the integrated UltraConnect AntennaTM, it automatically searches for the best WLAN connection that is available. Tri-mode operation helps you connect and switch between a/b/g wireless LANs in your office, or if you subscribe and connect to WLANs where you travel.

Which of these two is preferable or are there other better options.
Thanks.
Ravi

MiniPCI = internal which uses the built-in antennas
Cardbus = PCMCIA card which will stick out from the side of your notebook
Search the forums FMI.

depends on what you use it for.

11b is fine for surfing and such. i have a intel 11b card in my t42 and if i need to transfer large files, i use the wired connection.

or i grab the 11g pcmcia card i have lying about but i prefer the wired's connection speed over even 11g.

Stick with that card, its ok.

Make sure you run the 30MB+ version of Access Connections to update everything related to wireless communication for the system. AC is great code.

You can download it here:
