How to change the regional wireless setting on T43??

#1 Post by CeeBee » Sat Apr 05, 2008 5:56 am

RE: ThinkPad T43 1871-4BU with Intel 802.11a/b/g Mini PCI wireless adapter.

Is it possible, and if so, how do I change the regional wireless setting on the above? As I'm traveling plenty .. I need to change this setting to get access to WLAN channels used outside the USA, e.g., in Europe up to channel 13 and in Japan up to channel 14. USA maxes out with channel 10 .. afaik.

Thanks.

It is possible, but the process is quite complicated for a non-linux person. If you want to give it a try, here's the link:

The method allows you to create a universal card. Otherwise you might want to replace the card with a Japanese one which covers all 802.11g channels, although some 802.11a channels are still not covered.

Hallo Ulrich,

Thanks, but no thanks. No way am I going to fiddle with the OEM built in Intel wireless card. I can live with the 11 channels for now, and, if need be, I'll probably buy a 3Com a/b/g slot card where you can change region via the software. Very easy.

I have two 3Com cards already for other computers, and they work fine all over the place. Fwiw, I checked the 3Com card .ini file and it seems they divide the world like this:

# 0 : ( 1 - 11 ) USA / Canada
# 1 : ( 1 - 13 ) Europe / Australia
# 2 : ( 10 - 11 ) Spain
# 3 : ( 10 - 13 ) France
# 4 : ( 1 - 14 ) Japanese

Cheers...

I have a spare Cisco CB21AG which I'm not using, I'd let you have for a fair market/eBay price. From the data sheet on it:
World Mode for International Roaming
Cisco simplifies deployment for international travelers and
multinational corporations with a new client adapter setting
called world mode. When placed in this mode, client adapters
automatically inherit channel configuration properties directly
from the Cisco Aironet AP to which they associate. This
feature enables a user to use a client adapter around the world
while still maintaining regulatory compliance.
Would that solve your problem? (Granted, using a second card is not a "solution," but if it works....)

Thanks David, but no need right now. My query was preemptive, as I haven't run into a problem with my Intel US-region card yet. And, in case I get a new wireless card, I'll get a 3Com of the same type I have already. I like to use the same stuff across all units.

And I can buy it in the USA (good price); all I have to do is to download the worldwide software version from 3Com's website.

Cheers...
