T42 15" Palm rest

#1 Post by off1c3r » Sat Apr 05, 2008 12:22 pm

Hi

Sorry if this was covered already.. I Searched but nothing definitive..

I might get into my pocession a used T42 15", but the mouse keys are having trouble. Since that section is attacched to the palm rest I checked out the service manual thinking it was 2 seperate parts then I noticed that they were integrated. Ok so I thought I could have bought the touchpad alone but it comes with the palm rest so I said ok and I went to check the parts info. It says this:
Palm rest assembly
with touch pad (Worldwide)
Note: The 15 inch models do not have a separate palm rest.

Does that mean
1. That palm rest for the 15" model is integrated with the whole top frame in some way?
2. (what I think) The standard palm rest listed there fits the 15" the same way?

On another post by ricerocket:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... =palm+rest

He put a fingerprint reader palm rest onto his 43 without the fingerprint reader to begin with. Seems easy and from the posts, the bios should be fine with the 43.. but can that be done on a 42 since the bios for the 40/41/42 are different than the 43..

Thanks
Franco

Hi: Most T42 motherboards do not have the biometric coprocessor chip needed to support fingerprint readers. The touchpad and keyboard bezel (2 pieces) on the 14" model are replaced with a single piece. If you have another touchpad from 14" or 15" model, it can be transplanted into your unit, but the part is not sold separately. If you want to try, send me a PM and I can sell you one of cracked 14" palmrests that I have here for that purpose. (much cheaper than a whole part)

Oh I think I understand.. like my T41, the keyboard bezel is one piece and the touchpad is another. On the T42, you're saying that both pieces are combined into one big big bezel but if I wanted to, I could use the 2 sections instead and it would connect the same?

The 15" thinkpads use a 1 piece bezel, the 14" models use a 2 piece bezel, they are not interchangeable. The touchpad assembly is the same.
Richk is offering you a palmrest so you can take off the touchpad and replace your defective mouse button one.
