Mt Thinkpads fan never turns off

#1 Post by strekship » Wed Dec 08, 2004 12:59 am

My T21 has a somewhat noisey fan. I was wondering if there was some way to disable the fan temporarily when silence in a classroom environmet is needed. The dell laptops at my school are silent. I know that my thinkpad can be quiet too because if i am changeing bios settings, and i let it idol for long enough while in the bios, the fans turn off and it is silent.

disabling the fan wuld not be a good idea as your CPU obviously needs it, a friend of mine disabled his for a while and it caused his CPU to sweat, his laptop was drenched from the inside!- this was not a tp, it was a sony but still, you get the picture. Even when my t42 is apparently silent, the fan is still ticking over to some extent, so in answer to question, unless you can find a specific hardware problem that can be fixed you are gonna have to deal with it.

Hi SimonCC,
that's a strange behavior of your T21. I got the same model and I almost completely forgot that there was a fan on it.
It is very rare, that it turns on, usually only when watching DVDs.
If it does not turn off, install Mobilemeter and check the temperature and at the same time, if there is some program in the backgorund that sucks up CPU time.
again, the T21 should be absolutely silent. When the HD turns off (in typing in Word) the machine is dead silent.

mobil meter said that it was running at 60c when it was ideling, and 75-80 when plaing Quake 3. I heard that the fan system in the t22 is better. Anyone got any idea of where i can get one cheap? The fan that is, not the whole system.

Never mind about the fan. Its my HDD. I took out the HDD and turned my laptop on, and it was dead silent. I put in the HDD and it was its normal volume. Is there anything i can do?

hello shrekship,

I just checked my T20 (with a 900 Mhz) and the idle temperture is around 40°C and with iTunes playing for hours at about 49°C.

I guess you might have a little insulator CPU problem??
