Just bought a very nice X40

#1 Post by raket » Sun Apr 06, 2008 2:17 pm

Got a really cheap X40 last week, (I bought alot of computer stuff for about $600, and i've sold alot so the price for the x40 itself is about $200, external usb cdburner included)

It's in a really nice condition except the very bad battery.

Reason for the downgrade from my previous X41T was that the X40 is smaller, better hardware support in linux (i like the old chipsets better then the onces in x41t), Aswell i like the fact i can use raid0 with 2xssd disks. (Sorry dudes, the X41T is _NOT_ for sale because i have a buyer who will pay $1000 for it)

So now i'm looking for battery update.

First of all i need a new 4cell battery (unused), What does it typical retail at?

And second i want to buy the component with part number. 92P1006
It's named something like "ThinkPad X40 Series Extended Life Battery"

A) Does this battery work in linux?
B) How much batterytime would i have with a 'full load' system (eg maximum cpufreq, wlan in use etc)
C) How much battery time would it be with downclocked cpu and wlan running?
D) Prize?

Edit: Does anyone have a pictures where the x40 is mounted on extended battery? Would be nice to see :-)

I bought my for similar price and I don't regret it :). It sells for $1250 on usanotebook.cz, poor europe. I hope you will post benches of your raid setup :).

Henrycc in the marketplace section might still have some X40 batteries. I picked up two (never used, manufactured in late 2006) 4-cell batteries from him a few weeks back for $30 each + shipping. I purchased these in anticipation of getting a dead battery with the X40 that I got from ebay, but I was fortunate enough to get an 8-cell that still holds ~60% charge, so I haven't tested the drain time on a 4-cell in any practical scenario.

My laptop has a compact flash card acting as the storage device and a linux kernel patched to allow for undervolting (700 mV at the lowest frequency and 908mV at max, which is a couple notches above what passed stress-testing). /proc/acpi lists a discharge rate of just under 7700 mW while editing a text file with wi-fi on (low-power mode) and minimum lcd brightness. (Add something like 900 mW when using the 1.8" HD.) I think that the 4-cell has a capacity of 27360 mWh ==> roughly 3.5 hours, in the best case. At mid-brightness, the rate works out to 8500-8600 mW. Full brightness takes things to 10 W.

I'd offer some data with wi-fi disabled, but my wireless hotkey doesn't want to work at the moment. (Simply removing the wifi module doesn't affect the rate in my case.)

Interesting call there datrop

I will go for a brand new battery directly from ibm, i will buy a new 4-cell battery and the big one to place under the box (i'm not a fan of the 8-cell battery, it makes my laptop ugly!)

Besides that i'm @ 10000mW at fullspeed with lowest brightness.
And @8000mW at lowest brightness / 600mhz speed.

Thanks for the tip about /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state, The x41t i have is a dog. I will sell it soon, X40 is really better.

One things that really makes me wonder is the fact the X40 have only 27000mwh battery (4-cell) [Maximum charge @ 10000mwh] and the X41T have a 64800mwh battery (8-cell) (It's down to about 49000~47000mwh on fully charged)

But the X41T will never go bellow 12w.

The values at 8000mw is on a unpatched kernel (2.6.23.1) , HPET timer disabled, using a 100hz kernel, TICKLESS disabled in kernel. WIFI built in (patched kernel with the madwifi-ng drivers, including the aircrack-ng driver).. i guess disabling wifi with atheros drivers in linux would be ifconfig ath0 down ;-) (That should disable radio and that auto so rates above are .... i guess because it's impossible to connect to any ap's with it, nor searching is possible)

iwlist ath0 scan
ath0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

goal is to undervolt box down to 5w.. using the P4-speedfreq opens up for downclock to 75mhz, and that's enough for me!
