sytem update problem, installed programs dont work *PIC 64K*

#1 Post by fredstev » Mon Apr 07, 2008 7:08 am

I'm having some sort of odd problem installing Thinkpad system update files. Everything I've tried lately appears to install correctly, but I get the screen message shown below twice. When I click "OK", it goes ahead to a second, very similar message, then whatever program I'm attempting to update or install appears to install correctly. It doesn't though, even though the new update is listed in the ibmtools folder.

A google search hasn't turned up much useful info. It seems to have something to do with identifying this Thinkpad's configuration. This is a X31 2672-REU according to "identify your system" at Lenovo's website. The sticker on the bottom says "Type 2672-BBU. Any ideas?

Did you have your X31 serviced for system board replacement?

Which Product Type shows up in the BIOS? 2672-BBU or 2672-REU?

The following thread might help you:

Setting S/N and TYPE on motherboard (need program)!?.

I have no idea if the board has been replaced or not, although I think maybe. The sticker on the bottom is dated 03/08 and has a different serial # than what system info shows. I got this on Ebay and it appears pristine - no signs of wear or use at all.

The product type that shows up in bios is 2672-REU and the serial # is different than what the (obviously new) sticker on the bottom shows.

I checked the thread you provided (thanks), and no blank fields, they agree with what "check your configuration" shows when going to the Lenovo website. This X31 works really well, but I would like to fix this problem, one of the things that I can't update or install is the utility that allows easy undocking from the media slice. I have to shut down in order to undock properly.

*bump*
I'm not making much progress on this problem. I wonder if it'd be a good idea to uninstall and reinstall system update? I wonder if the subject "system update fails to start"

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=56140

is related to my problem? I've read through the log file generated and I get an error also that seems to be related to the "Getnexthwid" which I don't understand.

Progress, slow but sure. The two errors that I am getting are related to the Agere systems AC97 modem drivers. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem, but no joy yet. At least now I know where to concentrate my search.

Anyone else had flaky errors caused by the modem?

Sorry I've no solution for you, I'll look for one, in the meantime I would suggest you install the drivers manually:

X31 - Downloads and drivers.

I also suggest you to reinstall the ThinkVantage System Update and make sure that you've Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 installed:

ThinkVantage System Update 3.13.

Yes, you should try to set Compatibility mode to SATA in the BIOS as well to see if that makes any difference.

OK, I've uninstalled both system update and the older version, updater, or whatever it was and reinstalled system update. Removed the modem drivers and reinstalled manually from the Lenovo website. Also, I have net framework 1.1, net framework 2.0 service pack 1, and net framework 3.0 service pack 1 installed. Still comes up with the same message and prevents system update from doing its job.

Tried simply removing the modem drivers, then running system update. No cigar, 3/4's through the update process, up comes the "found new hardware, pci modem", so windows installs the drivers, which promptly hoses system update.

Remember when life was simple? I should have quit with the Atari 800.
