t42 type 2379 won't turn on

#1 Post by nakman8 » Mon Apr 07, 2008 7:15 pm

The story I was given is that the computer was left in a car during
cold weather. Now it won't turn on. Battery charging circuit still works but nothing happens when you hit power button.I have tried different keyboard with same results. I have torn the whole LT apart and checked for the obvious, bad connections, burnt traces, etc.
Any Ideas?? Have also checked al the fuses I could locate.

Any help, ideas wil be greatly appreciated.

The temperature changes could have caused differential contractions of the graphics chip pins relative to the solder in the socket causing the "graphics chip" problem.

How old is the computer?

The cold did not damage it but it was probably turned on too soon after it was brought inside - not letting it aclimate and warm up long enough.
Condensation formed when the warm air hit the cold laptop and water and motherboard don't mix well. The effect was just like a liquid spill on the keyboard. Motherboard may be gone unfortunately...

If you have a different keyboard try it. The power switch may be bad. Also, if you have a dock, there is a power switch there.

Don't how old it is. Would the chip problem keep it from booting?
I already tried a different keyboard with no success.

Yes, the graphics chip problem can cause all sorts of issues. Usually the fan spins but no sign of life beyond that.

I didn't think the cold would be enough to cause this kind of damage either but this graphics chip issue is really a disaster - the stuff class action lawsuits are made of (IBM Deathstar.... sorry, Deskstar)! Who knows what a bit of differential thermal expansion/contraction could do?
