Update model number on T40
Update model number on T40
I recently upgraded my T40 to a Dothan 1.86 Pentium M and two gigs of DDR333. The computer is running rather nicely though a little on the hot side. Is a 96 degrees fahrenheit at idle too high? I've been running Folding@home and Prime95 on it and the temps have only gotten as high as 110. Should I get the long heatsink and fan? Also I tried updating through system update and it has a strange number for the model (TP-_1) and updates fail because of this. It did this after I upgraded to the A/B/G wireless card too but a BIOS update fixed that but doesn't seem to fix it this time around.

I think I may have bad news for you...... if your CPU truly is a Dothan 1.86, then it is running at 1.4Ghz! The 1.86 Dothan is a 533MHz FSB processor and your T40 has a 400MHz FSB. 90oC would be very hot but 90oF is actually quite cool (because of the underclocking). Your memory is also running at 266 but that's not much different, performance wise, from 333.

Well, the CPU runs at 400MHz and the memory bus at 133Mhz/266Mhz DDR on the T40 (they are asynchronous on these Intel chipsets). On the T41 and T42 the FSB is 400MHz and the memory bus 166MHz/333MHzDDR. You may have a T41/42 motherboard in the computer explaining the the odd motherboard number and the 333MHz memory reading. 533MHz FSB was introduced on the T43, along with DDR2 memory.

hmm... maybe. when i first got it though it was reported as a 2373-2CU and updates worked fine. windows says that its running at 1.5 and 266 like it is supposed to be. I wasn't expecting it to run at 1.8 I just wanted the Dothan for the slight increase in performance and power savings. Not to mention maybe someone will recycle another T4* at my shop
i've tried using the bios update tool to manually set the model number back to what it should be but that doesn't seem to stick.

Maybe I'm a bit off track, but updating the MTM to something other than what the machine shipped as ... isn't that a bit misleading? Even when you're swapping out parts....?

I'm not trying to change it from what it originally was. I am trying to restore it to what it was when I originally got it which was 2373-2CU. Either it doesn't like that number because the parts in it dont match or where its stored is corrupt.

Well, it sounds like you know what you're doing (and probably more than I do).
I've never messed with the internal codes of the motherboard (a bit beyond me).
Good luck!

So it seems as though my processor which should be running 1.5ghz is currently running at 600mhz :/
Any ideas as to why it is running so slow or is PC Wizard 2008 reading the speed wrong. Computer doesn't feel like it is running at 600mhz.

That is probably the SpeedStep technology which lowers your CPU multiplier to 6x. That's normal ;-]EvilH wrote:So it seems as though my processor which should be running 1.5ghz is currently running at 600mhz :/

The step level for that processor is wrong for your motherboard, aside from the wrong FSB speed. It will never run right in a T40 T41 board, and speedstep will not be able to control it.
A T43 board would solve all your problems, except you would need new ddr2 memory.
You need to either get the right processor or put back in the original 1.3 the T40 came with (if it is the original motherboard) if you want it to run right.

If I could even find a T43 board for cheap would it fit in the T40 case? And I don't see why it would run that slow. I would have thought it would clock down to the highest the board could run like it does with desktop processors.

Sorry about reviving such an old post but I figured it was better than starting a new one since the subject is the same. I recently bought a T42 off someone on here and dropped the 1.86 mentioned earlier in this thread in to it. I tried my 1.3ghz Banias only to find my lack of static bag seems to have fried it. So I popped the 1.7ghz Dothan from the T42 into the T40. Now I never got the 1.8ghz Dothan to run faster than 1.4ghz due to the limitations of my T40 motherboard. Yet NHC and CPUz state that it is running at its full 1.7ghz. I am completely baffled. Any thoughts?
EDIT: Now that I got Windows loaded up on the T42 it would appear that my 1.8ghz must be bad or a bogus processor as it is still only running at 1.4ghz. The multipliers and FSB all look correct (400mhz rated FSB, 100mhz actual bus speed [since Intel has a quad pumped FSB] and a x14 multiplier for a speed of 1.4ghz).

You don't really seem to get what processor architectures work in which Thinkpads. The 1.7Ghz Dothan works at the right speed in a T42 because it has the required 400Mhz Front Side Bus. The 1.86 Ghz Dothan CPU you previously used had a 533 Mhz front side bus. 400 does not equal 533. The actual reason that the 533Mhz Dothan would run at all in a T40/T42 has to do with a built in multiplier that caused it to run at 1.4Ghz. That same multiplier allows a 1.7Ghz Dothan with a 400Mhz FSB to run at 1.7GHz
.
Look at the following link. Any Dothan processor with a 400MT/s Front Side Bus will work in your T42. Stay away from 'A" models .e.g 725A for another reason.

Well I feel like a moron. This was explained to me last time and yet here I am bothering you fine people again. I apparently need to go dig out my A+ text book and study up again on multipliers and FSB speeds. For some reason I have it in my head that the FSB will clock itself down :S
Anyone wanna trade my Pentium M 750 for a 755? or anyone got a Banias that I can pop back in my T40 since I killed mine that way I can put the 1.7 back in the T42.
