Warranty transfer for X61

#1 Post by thesmithster » Mon Apr 07, 2008 7:06 pm

Hi,

I've recently bought a 2nd hand X61 and it had it running for about a month when the hard disk failed. IBM/Lenovo wont let me transfer the warranty and so wont give me any support :-(

I have reinstalled Vista (just had to buy a new copy!) but when I have installed and updated with the Lenovo Rescue & Recovery software etc... it doesnt recreate the recovery partition???

Is there anywhere I can obtain/buy a copy of the Vista rescue DVD/CD's. As I've said I have a valid Vista license, but really need that ability to recover/backup if needed.

Can anyone help please???

Welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear of your trouble.

In the US there is no problem transferring the warranty. I thought this policy applied to all ThinkPads.

What is your model and type?

Hi Brad,

Its either a 7675-CTO or a 7673-CTO (the label is damaged!)

Forgive me if this is common knowledge but I bought mine second hand and have never bought a new one.

Apparently there is some pin number and security code which is sent to the buyer when they buy an extended warranty. They then have to register the codes etc to activate the warranty. Lenovo UK have stated that I need to validate the warranty with Lenovo Bratislavia (I have absolutely no reason why???)

But the response I got back from them (Bratislavia) was that it was none-transferrable (something to do with the original registration?), and would need to go back to the original buyer of the laptop, who is based in America (EBAY) and is no longer a registered user.... The plot thickens!!!!

Any help is welcomed with open arms!!!

Very confusing warranty policies in the EU.

Try looking in the BIOS for the model and type.

In general, with ThinkPads even where a base warrantry is supported in the a country (other than the country of original sale) through IWS, some of the extended warranties may not be. This was the case in IBM days, and as far as I'm aware that has not changed significantly with Lenovo. It will depend on specifically what the "extension" was to the base warranty.

You need to work out the warranty issue with Lenovo, but buying from a seller another country before confirming specifically what warranty support will be available from the local organisation you expect to deliver the warranty is always a risk with any product.

If you used a retail version of Vista, it will not install a recovery partition.

Quite apart from any warranty issues, Lenovo in the UK should still sell you set of Recovery disks for whatever operating system is licenced on the Microsoft CoA (Certificate of Autheticity) on the base of your X61. This will install the relevant factory-level operating system, including the recovery partion.

Cheers,

You should be able to look up your warranty on the Lenovo site. The following link works regardless of US or UK:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... -WARNTY#sw

I would assume you have the same capability in the UK? I just picked up a used T42 with 10 months of warranty left. EZ Serve accepted my request for repair and I should have my unit back in less than a week. It is worth the try if the X61 is still under a valid warranty regardless of any stickers on the bottom of the unit.

Good luck...Bill

I bought my X61t in USA and can get warranty service in Europe with no problems !

For recovery Cds, the problem is that it is NOT covered by Warranty ! Sa as I lost my recovery partition before creating recovery Cds, I had to buy the Cds at Lenovo ! No way to get them for Free (In France a least) !

So I bought a brand new set of recovery DVDs with vista Ultimate! I 'll check the compatibility of the set with other models than the 7764 this evening ....

Thanks Chocorem!

The machine does not show up on the warranty check on the Lenovo site and so I contacted them direct, hence the trouble I'm having now!!

Is there any way I can purchase a copy from you? I take it once the recovery partition is in place, if there are any drivers which are not correct, I can manually update it with the correct versions/drivers?

Let me know? I can pay with paypal if you like which would make it safe for both of us?

Thanks for your help on this! 8)
