T42 Shipped Really Fast (big surprise!)

#1 Post by cooljw » Tue Jun 01, 2004 12:41 am

I ordered a T42 (2378FVU) from IBM on Sunday May 30, 2004 from the IBM website. It gave me an estimated ship date of JULY 7, 2004. Wasn't surprising, as the phone sales agents indicated a minimum 2 week wait, and mentioned if I didn't catch what was in inventory I would have to wait a full 4 weeks for more units to be produced and ready. So, I figured IBM had exhausted current inventories and my order was at the back of the line.

Well, I just received notification that my laptop SHIPPED today (5/31), just a day after I ordered it!

How can it be? Has IBM been working overtime to make T42s or what?! Of course I'm pleasantly surprised, but hope nothing is wierd about getting my laptop much sooner than anticipated (a customer return perhaps?). I doubt there will be problems, but we'll see!

I ordered my 2379DYU last week (Tue, May 25) and was told to expect it ready for shipment around July 5 or 6. Of course, come Friday night (May 28) the status page showed that it had shipped. Yeah, a very pleasant surprise.

Now, if you are holding your breath for it to arrive during the week, I'd be a little careful. My package is shipping via UPS 2nd Day Air but it's coming directly from Hong Kong. So, it takes about 3 days for US Customs/ FDA to process it etc before UPS can have it in the domestic shipping system. All in all, give yourself a good 5 or 6 days from when it ships to when you get it in your hand.

Nonetheless, getting a computer nearly a month early is something that is always welcome. :)

I used the default configuration on the IBM website. It's an Express Model, but is not part of their special "Buy Today, Ship Today" program (in fact no T42s are).

Very quickly, for those who don't want to pull up the TABOOK:

1.7 Dothan, 256mb RAM
Combo Drive
ATI 9600/64MB (14.1" SXGA+, NOT Flexview)
40gb 5400RPM
Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG
Intel PRO/1000 Gigabit Ethernet and 56K V.92 modem
1 yr. depot warranty

I'm upgrading the warranty and buying a 512mb SODIMM to put in myself. After that it's more PC than I'll need!

2378FVU means the 1.7 dothan processor, 256 mb ram, 14.1" sxga+ with 9600 gpu, 5.4k40gb hd, combo dvd/cdwriter, intel b/g wireless. Overall, very nice config. HD and ram can easily be upgraded for a fraction of what IBM charges.

Congrats on such a quick process :P

I also ordered mine, same model (FVU), the same day (Sunday), estimated shipping date was July 7, but I can't check my order status now because I downloaded the email at home (I'm at school). Hopefully mine shipped too, that would be awesome.

Is there any other way I can check the order status? I checked my email, I didn't get one saying it shipped, but I really hope it did.

The T42 I RMA'd, it was on UPS 2 day, and I got it after two days, even though it shipped from Hong Kong and said it was in customs. This is on standard shipping (3-5 days) though :(

I ordered mine exactly 3 week ago(21 long days) In which each and everyday, I see people's pad being send to them, day in day out.

I was super [censored]. Now 2 more days before I will never buy from IBM again. I feel nirvana. If IBM dont ship, I would just use my current computer till I die. So its all cool. Nothing to fuss about. No need to raise my blood pressure, no need to stress my brain. I just relax and let each and every individual cells in my body be in happiness. Breathing and exhaling.

BTW, its about to rain outside. I love rain and my rain coat.

Hey JohnV... I just got off the phone with UPS and the deal is that the FDA/ Customs is holding it up for inspection/ clearance. Now, since there are some 85 packages going to 75 different recipients all grouped into the same shipment, they have to ALL be cleared before any one of them can be moved back into the UPS system for delivery.

So, from what the rep told me, whenever clearance happens, delivery will be made within the next business day.

Hope this helps.

Folks,

Finally have my T42p (2373GRU) on order as of today, June 1st. Estimated ship date is July 7th. I received my T42 seven days after ordering, so we'll see how long the T42p takes. I didn't add or change anything, so there should be no delays in dealing with customizations, etc.

That's weird..I went to go check my order status, and it says:

Customer not found. For Assistance call 1-877-999-7115.

So now I'm on the phone with them...

thinkpadtan and Skywing: You should really call them and see what's up. What model did you order? It may be that less people ordered it...they did say 2-4 weeks though.

It will blow if the machines get delayed because of that. This is very painful!

pramit...I just called UPS also and they told me the units are still held up in customs and that the clearing agent works for customs and not UPS. So all they can do for me is send a message to the UPS group there and have them call me back. I will let you know if they have any additional info.

This sucks!

From the time the orders arrive for customs inspection, it can take anywhere from 24-48 hours for clearance. Usually, it never takes this long, and once they clear, they move quickly. Don't be surprised to see the UPS guy at your door tomorrow. I had an order ship on the 30th and it was delivered today. It's not IBM's fault, or UPS's fault. There are certain protocols that need to be followed. Calling UPS, IBM, or even customs won't get these in your hands any faster. Frustrating? Yes! But there are several third parties involved in this process that it's a wonder anything ever makes it to it's respective destination.

If it's two day, it usually arrives in 2 days. Mine went upto Anchorage, Alaska for customs after it reached Louisiana, and still got it in two business days (I'm in NY)

Seems as though my customer ID is working now, it says it's "Customizing/Packing". Woopee!

How are you guys tracking your orders? I don't see any kind of "track your order" option on the order status page.

Well once it's shipped it'll say that it shipped, and then the morning after the tracking number is up on there.

Ah, possibly delayed because of the holidays

Thanks Nabeel,

I ought to call them. I believe that I have to be patient though. Which is why I want to wait till the expected ship date to be over before I call. However, I did email a query though.

I guess I am stupid and patient. But I dont need pad to stay alive. Funny how when I see everyone getting their thinkpad...I am sooo mess up psychologically. I am thinking isnt it suppose to be first come first serve.
In anycase, I think my order was mess up because of the first couple of days the IBM site was funny.

They just skipped me and went on to others. Not bothering to check on me, to see whether I am still interested in my order.
