I've already managed to fill up 50GB of space, so I'm looking for some good tips on saving SSD space.
A few things I've done which could help others:
1. I turned off Hibernation. The thing boots so fast that I decided I wanted my 4GB back. If you have 2GB of RAM, the benefit of doing this will be less.
2. I deleted the Vista SP1 installation residue using the utility supplied with the Windows AIK toolkit (I actually did this to my image before applying it to the X300). I don't remember how much space it recovers, but it was big enough to be worth it.
3. I have a 16GB USB memory stick that is pretty fast. If you want to keep your documents on something removable, you can right-click the blue special folders (for Documents, Music, Pictures, etc.) and you can relocate them as needed. I think this is better than moving the entire user profile because there is a lot of application data stored inside that, when run from the SSD, makes applications run much faster.
I would also like to move c:\windows\winsxs to another location using a junction point. Unfortunately, I don't think it's good to move this to a USB key because it might mess up Windows if the key is not present. If there were an SD card reader, it would be perfect for relocating infrequently used things via junction points (and never taking out the card).
Tips for saving SSD space
ok well what do you have eating up that much GB in the first place? Besides the default Vista install using up 5GB, which apps or what data do you have to fill up 45GB?
unless you have R&R running which makes backups of itself to the samedrive (totally retarded)
