Z60m rejects 2 memory modules after CPU Upgrade

#1 Post by SunDancer » Sat Apr 12, 2008 11:50 am

Hi everybody,

I have a weird problem here.

I replaced my 1.5GHz Celeron with a brand new Pentium M 760 and since then everything goes wild.

With both 512MB memory modules installed (they were in there from day 1) windows xp may boot but eject sooner or later... either with a bluescreen or just rebooting the hole machine. With only one memory module everything is fine and the [censored] thing runs. Even Knoppix DVD won't work correctly with to modules.

Since the 2nd memory module was sold to me "extra" it's not the same brand as the original IBM/lenovo (remember: it worked though... with the celeron CPU)

So I bought 2 1GB memory modules and that thing won't even boot xp. pc doctor freezes sometime during the complete test.

Again, with just one module installed, everything is fine and the machine does as it's told.

in december 2007 the systemboard had to be replaced with a "used repairpart" by a lenovo service technician.

With just one memory module installed and xp running I ran prime95 to test the CPU.... but that whent all smothe...

I just can't get any clear error reading! What can I do? Does anybody have some good idea?

EDIT: I tried the thing pernalonga posted in his thread, but no good :S

First thing would be to test the "bad" memory module:
http://www.memtest.org/

Download and burn a bootable CD with memtest86+ and run it on your machine with the "bad" memory installed. Let us know what happens and we can proceed further.

I allready used memtest, the Microsoft Memtesttool and the one embedded in the PC Doctor disc. all reports are "memory is ok"

(I'm working on this problem for 5 days now!)

*gna*

Can you post the specifications (speed, timing etc) of the "bad" module? This finformation should probably be on a sticker on the module itself ...

One 512MB module with 4-4-4-11
One 512MB module with 4-4-4-12 (IBM)
Two (identical) 1GB modules with 4-4-4-12

The first two worked fine with the celeron. one is an original IBM part and the other was sold to me from the vendor I got the Z60m from.

Edit: if I try to run memtest with both 1GB modules installed, even this tool freezes.

I begin to hat my life :S

Are you running the latest BIOS in the Z60m?

Ok, after looking a bit closer at what memtest put's on the screen:

Using the lower memoryslot my module is identified as 4-4-4-12. so far, so good. Using the same module in the upper slot memtest reads: 3-2-2-0 wtf?

I've tried 3 different modules and it's always the same. So I called support and I wonder if they get back to me tomorrow... my servicecontract reads "next businessday" and since this is the 5th systemboard I want a new one this time. no more "servicable used part"

I'm really sick 'n tired with this piece of ... *sigh*

Next time I buy some cheap laptop... at least than I know what to expect ;)

5 systemboards?. Personally I'd insist on a new machine.

2 systemboards were ruined by the serviceman... he killed the wlan switch... it's a very small and fragile switch. easy to break...

first systemboard had a broken ltp-port, #2 and 3# defektiv and the 4th has now a broken memory slot.

A new machine wouldn't do me any good. I've replaced the slow hdd, added RAM and upgraded the CPU... so, bottom line: a new machine would be a new tft, frame and systemboard... not much of an improvement *g*
