T21 with no sound after XP upgrade to SP2...NEED HELP :(

#1 Post by Lilygirl41 » Sun Apr 13, 2008 12:54 am

I have a hand me down T21 (2647) which I know little about. I have had the laptop for a year and it has always worked wonderfully for me. Until I needed to update my Itunes and it said that I needed an updated version of Windows XP to install the Itunes update. So I updated to Windows XP SP2 and thought all was well and working fine until I realized that I no longer have sound. In the control panel for sound there is no sound device listed and all areas greyed out. I would have performed a system restore but there is nothing beyond the day that I upgraded to SP2... computer novice mistake :(. I am having a really tuff time figuring out how to reinstall something to restore sound. I have to be able to take care of this myself because I am a broke student and can't afford to get it fixed by a professional. Also my Thinkpad has no CD drive so i cannot use a CD to reinstall or install anything. It has to be something I can download from the internet for free.

I will be happy to answer any questions that you have as long as I know the answer :). I have been driving myself crazy with this for 2 days!!! Please keep responses simple and in laymens terms as I am not very computer savvy! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum!

All you need to do is to install the audio driver for Windows XP. The Lenovo driver page is down right now, I'll update this post with a link to the right drivers you need sunday morning.

edit:
support page is still down as of 12.30 PM EST, will update when it is available again.

The Lenovo driver download site has been down for going on 12 hours now. Does anyone know anything I can try? I am desperate to get this resolved before the start of the week.

Well not only did the update not work but I think I completely wiped out my computer. :( I got frustrated and uninstalled SP2 thinking it would just go back to regular XP and on reboot all I get is a blue screen with "fatal error" and some other stuff on the page. It keeps trying to reboot only to end up at the blue screen every time. I think I ruined my laptop. And that is so not good because I can't afford a new one. :( I appreciate the help that was offered and if anyone can tell me that my laptop is not doomed that would be wonderful. Totally bummed! :(

No it is probably not doomed. It sounds like you have driver problems the best thing to do is to boot up into safe mode. Then reinstall the sound driver again then see if it will boot in regular mode.

I just want to thank everyone who tried to help. I ended up taking it to a friend who is a professional and he is fixing it. I don't know enough about computers and it was too hard for me to fix myself. I tried for 4 days and I finally gave up! I thank you though and will look to this forum again in the future! :)
