T41p freezing repeatedly

#1 Post by Zakman3 » Mon Apr 14, 2008 3:25 am

Hi All.

I have a T41p (2374-GGU) with the following specs:

1.7 Ghz P-M
1 GB RAM
60 GB 7200 rpm HDD
CDRW/DVD combo drive
14.1 SXGA with ATI Fire GL Adapter

The machine was purchased in August of 2005, and is still under warranty.

Problem: It was running slow and had accumulated loads of junk since my previous recovery over a year ago, so I restored the system using the service partition about a month ago. Installed System Update 3.xx, the latest version of Access Connections, and all updates, etc.

The system began to hard freeze (only way out was to press the power button till the machine shut off, then switch it on again) at random, with progressively shorter intervals. Finally it began freezing barely a few minutes after bootup. I tried to restore again but the service partition was no longer accessible, and I did not have any recovery disks, so I sent it in for repair to my local IBM service partner. They ran PC-Doctor diagnostics, found no hardware problems, and restored again. Unfortunately, when I got the machine back, it began hard locking intermittently again, even though I did not run any updates or install new software on it.

It was restored a third time, and in the meantime, the local business partner has requested the regional IBM office to send them the latest recovery disk for the machine. However, it is still hard locking every few minutes. I am a loss as to what the problem might be. Any help is appreciated!

Is it hard locking once in Windows?

It boots into Windows, and hard locks after a variable interval- can be any time between 1~10 minutes.

At that point it has to be reset using the power button.

Try running a "live" Linux CD and see what happens.

If it freezes in Linux, you definitely have a hardware problem. If not, you have a software issue within XP.

My assumption would be that this is a hardware problem, and can be related to anything-bad wireless or BT card, media drive, RAM...even the motherboard itself.

If you determine that there is a hardware issue after running Linux, send it back to IBM.

Good luck.
