SP1 breaks apps
I have some minor issues with Service Pack 1, one includes breaking Kawaks another Virtual Game Station. Firefox had an issue until I uinstalled it and reinstalled it.

It was well publicized that SP1 would not fix compatibility issues with certain program. If you're having an issue with programs, look them up online to see if the software maker has put out any updates. That'll probably your best bet for a solution.

I think it's always best to do a fresh install and then immediately applying the Service Pack before any applications are installed! That way, you'll have a smoooothly running system. It makes total sense that one poster here said they had to uninstall and reinstall Firefox, for example. 2 more of my cents.

Funny thing, I'm finding the same thing. Major instabilities after SP1 from numerous apps.
Of course every vendor has an answer: Just buy all new software in the latest editions.
I can't help but wonder, is it the apps? Is it SP1? Or is this something that happens when the Lenovo/ThinkVantage stuff is added into the mix? Even Google Earth makes it unstable, and i thought those folks had programmers AND ethics...

I think the easiest way to go is with Vista DVD that inludes SP1, so you get it all installed in one shot and don´t have to bother with app issues. Everything then works just fine (including the well-known Vista "discrepancies"
).

Marin, I am not at all sure that I understand your post.
A disc with Vista/SP1 on it can only be used as a baseline installation on a blank drive. That means it will still have eveyr problem with every application, since each one will still have to be manually reinstalled AFTER the Vista reinstallation.
Whether SP1 is slipstreamed with a Vista installation, or performed on top of a Vista installation, the resulting installation should be the same either way. And that won't matter if an application modifies the Vista environment, or can't run under it.
What do you mean by "Vista discrepancies" ?

True, but once done everything works fine after, which is not always the case with installing SP1 after having installed OS and apps: even if you reinstall the broken apps, it is not granted that they work afterwards, means, you willl have to go through the regedit to fix any misfortuned keys that prevent the proper running of those apps, i.e. simply reinstalling apps doesn´t always solve the problem. I can tell you from my own experience that almost every havier and complex application (like Matlab, Maya, Autocad, 3ds Max) can be subject to such problems. In this case I would rather reinstall OS with slipstreamed SP1 and apps than trying to fix reg keys. For me it´s a matter of 2 hours to have my system up.
As to Vista "discrepancies" it was just a joke
that some nice well-known bugs and probabely architecture problems of Vista are still present even after SP1 and still "working fine"
Side note: As you pointed out, the resulting installation should be the same either way. I agree, but it´s just not the same. If you take a look at the registry and make a comparison, you would find some differences. I don´t know if these are of any importance at all, but it might be an example that SP1 integration works differently in different cases.

I'm finding SP1 breaks many apps. Things that ran just fine before, now cause the computer to not log off, or not shutdown, or restart to a blank desktop--if at all.
Once SP1 is installed, Vista becomes the most fragile version of NT that I've ever seen, and a stunning disappointment for that reason alone.
