another hard drive kicks the bucket-but not a disaster

#1 Post by mgo » Tue Apr 15, 2008 6:46 pm

Not sure where or when I got this drive, but it was a 60 gig 7200 rpm Hitachi.

It was fast, but would always have these occasional "fits" when it would seem to read data real fast and the whole computer would halt until it was done.

Process Explorer showed nothing unusual, even when it was acting wierd.

Spinrite utility show some errors that were corrected.

Finally, tonight it made one final funny little "whiney" sound and the machine locked up. So long hard drive.

That's "only" the third notebook hard drive death I've witnessed in around 15 years. Not bad, I guess.

Oh and yes, I have everything backed up and other drives ready to plug in as replacements, so no problem there.

My point is, yes, hard drives do die. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. Have backups, and be prepared.
