Will my Z61t handle the SDHC secure digital format?

Yes, it should:

SD Card slot.

Supported Systems - Notebooks.

Windows XP requires a patch however Vista has built in support for SDHC cards:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934428
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

SDHC

#3 Post by RRHODY » Thu Apr 17, 2008 2:15 am

This section from your second link doesn't specifically state the HC part of SDHC.

Multimedia Card, xD Picture Card, Secure Digital:

* ThinkPad Z61t

So far, my sorting out of confusion says plain SD works in a SDHC slot, but not the other way around.
Aren't the two types, SD and SDHC sufficiently different?

Your Microsoft link is very helpful since, if I buy a SDHC it will likely be the 8 gig version, and, apparently from this Microsoft link the patch is needed to exceed 4 gig.

I'd really like to hear from an owner of the Z61t who has used a SDHC in the SD slot on their unit, other than in a stand alone card reader.

The hotfix works on my Z60m, which is older than your Z61t.

The difference between SD and SDHC is that SD is byte addressed and SDHC is sector addressed (a sector is 512 bytes).

For the readers in thinkpads it is a software issue, that can be fixed with the Windows hotfix. For an external USB card reader the problem is the software built into the USB reader, so you would have to buy a new USB reader.

Good info, thanks.
I'm going ahead with getting an 8 gig SDHC; found out it'll work in my Canon digital, so there's no downside if it doesn't work in my Z61t.

Got a 8 GB Patriot SDHC at Fry's for $39.99; downloaded and installed the patch from Microsoft. Worked flawlessly first time installed in the Z61t SD slot. Copying my second full length feature to watch en route to Dulles next week. Intend to watch one or both using just the battery (7 cell), without using the aircraft's power outlet.
Thanks for all the help.

I have a Transcend 8GB SDHC card as well and it worked after the patches... with some limitations

When formatted in FAT32, I could not access files copied after approx 4 GB were copied.

I cannot format the card in NTFS in the built-in reader/writer. But once the card is formatted on an external reader/writer, then I can read/write to it to its full capacity without any problems. It is slooooow anyway (20 mn to copy a 4 GB file)!

RRHODY: are you using a FAT32 or NTFS formatted card? How do you proceed?

The card is FAT32 and took files larger than 4 gig. It is S L O W copying files, but the playback of a movie seems "normal."

when i reformat in Windows with the card in the reader, I definitely cannot copy files larger than 4GB ("destination drive is full" error)
How do you format in FAT32?

BTW, I tested the speed in FAT32 and it is of the same order of magnitude than in NTFS: around 10 MB/s

When the card is in the Z61t, Windows, My Computer, right click properties, format, I can can change the volume name, but have only the one choice of formating FAT32.
I put the card in my Canon digital and format it in the camera; it will captures photos (2,577 of 'em) and the card will be re-labeled as CANON.
When I put it back in the Z61t, I can reformat FAT32 and relabel with Windows and get the full 8 GB.

FAT32 does not support file sizes larger than 4 GB. You can have many files with at total size larger than 4 GB, but each file must be smaller than that.

FAT32 was introduced in 1996 and, as it always is, it fixed only the immediate problem at the time, which was drive sizes growing beyond 2 GB.

Misunderstood. I'm not copying files LARGER than 4GB, I was talking about having 8 GB of storage on the SDHC.
My vertical hold must have slipped. Sorry

OK - so we are indeed experiencing the same thing: 8GB recognized in FAT32, very slow read/write in the internal reader.

Out of curiosity: can anyone format a SDHC card in NTFS in the internal reader? I can only do it with an external reader (and I can read/write after in the internal reader)

Curious - what kind of files are greater than 4 GB? I don't think I've got anything that big <G>.

TrueCrypt files. I could have 2 files just below 4Gb but it is much easier to have one single 8GB file that I move from the laptop to the desktop
