X61T Lost in Shipping / XP Tablet Edition???

Well, UPS just confirmed that my Laptop is lost:

4GB RAM
160GB 7200 RPM HDD
SXGA+
XP Pro Tablet

They said they would ship another one, I told them there where to go because I'm not waiting anymore. I just went into J&R and they have the exact SAME config except for:

- J&R's come with the UltraBase6 w/ DVD+-R/W (don't really care about the dvd burner i'll never use it)
- Only 2GB (1 x 2 DIMMs) -> Upgrade to 4GB is $100
- 5400 RPM 120GB HDD, I will buy a 160GB 7200 and give the 120GB away (I can pick one up for $150)
- Windows Vista Business (I will not run Vista in this lifetime, I need XP Tablet edition, don't know if i'll use the tablet functionality or not, I just wanted a SXGA+ screen in a 12.1" FF. Anyone know where I can get this? I wil be really [censored] off if Lenvo charges me for it - to "upgrade" from Vista to XP Tablet plus waiting for shipment if it actually makes it.)

My configured price from Lenovo ($2000 USD w/ shipping+tax)

Price at J&R: $1800 USD, another 100 for the mem upgrade, and another 150 for the 160GB drive, which will probably come to $2250 with tax (8.4% here)

Anyone know where I can obtain a key and XP tablet edition quickly? If I buy the laptop I would want to start using it right away.

It seems like you are in a hurry to get your tablet ASAP, but if you don't mind waiting 1.5 months (that's how long the estimated shiping is), if you order now again from Lenovo you can get a better deal than you had.

Vista Business 32- Native inking / tablet support in Vista is better. I'm willing to give it a shot even though I prefer XP. Vista isn't too bad; I use it (the 64-bit version) on a comp with 4 GB ram and its blazing fast.

Keep in mind when configuring, that currently the 1.6 GHz -> 1.8 GHz is +$20/+$40 (CPP/regular), but you cannot get teh SXGA with the 1.8 GHz. Just try it and you'll see the SXGA option get replaced with XGA.

Last time I contacted Lenovo regarding possibly obtaining 64-bit recovery media for Vista they told me they don't do upgrades from 32-bit to 64-bit, but that they would send me XP Pro Tablet recovery discs for free if I wished. Some members have gotten the free recovery media, others have had to pay, but just a heads up that this late in the game XP Pro is still available for free to some users. Just in case you wanted the option of both Vista and XP.

And if you did go the Vista route and they didn't offer XP for free the XP recovery discs should cost no more than ~$45. You could burn Vista recovery media, buy the XP media, and have 2 OS's to choose from for minimal cost.

Ahhh, cool. Thanks for that info. I am inclined to "tough it out" on Vista, since my reason for buying this is for the Tablet mode, and I want a maximal tablet experience. But if it is possibly free, I may as well try

Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 can only be found through OEM channels like computer manufacturers i.e. lenovo (in a form of product recovery disks), this version of Windows wasn't released to retailers.

What was it that you said that had them offering you the CD set for free?

Where would you burn that from?
