Vista SP1 less stable anyone? BSoD? Froze?

Ever since I installed SP1, my T60 has been getting BSoD, Froze few times a week. I have to uninstall my SP1 to gain a full stability again. Anyone?

Sorry, I have no solution for you. My three T60 machines are doing fine with Vista SP1. Not bragging, but posting this reply just so you have something to compare to.

JDH: I tried Vista Biz 64 bit for a short time on my T60 with 3 gig of ram and 7200 rpm drive.

I was not particularly impressed. Not much speed difference vs. 32 bit and some Office apps opened a little slower than the nearly instant response on 32 bit.

What's better for you with 64 bit? Just curious...

At this point - nothing. Virtually everything has installed in the X86 directory. It just seemed pointless for the longer haul to stay at 32 bits. I am trying to tame Vista. At this point, it uses 4 times as much disk space, needs 4 times as much memory, and hasn't done anything for me that XP cannot do. Further, it has taken important things away from me, so the net result is a negative return on investment at this point. Only time will tell if this will improve, and I am certainly willing to give it a fair chance. ... JDH

Thank you, I was trying to find out what might be causing the conflict. but I guess I couldn't be bothered. It's much easier to just switch back to previous version of Vista.

The only thing that I like about Vista is the search indexing. This particular feature I find to be very useful for my day to day work. Not sure if this justifies upgrading to Vista with 4x memory requirement, disk space, etc.

I am trying to get Vista going myself, and I am not trying to dissuade you. But the search tool you think Vista has is available for XP (I have it running). XP will find OCR text, and it this point, Vista search will not. That will change I hope. ... JDH

Corrective note: Apparently changes with SP1 have helped. I can use the advanced search and find what I want. Progress!!

XP has search indexing, too, but it must be installed by the user. Download it here:

It seems to work about as well as the Vista version, which means it is reasonably good. The ver 4 is much improved over the 3x version which had many flaws.

I found that the 64 bit verson of Vista takes longer to load my Office 2007 apps vs. nearly instant load in Vista 32 bit version.

The latest Search in 64 bit does not seem to recognize files from Microsoft's very own OneNote, but 32 bit does.

To me, Vista in any form puts up a nicer, easier on the eyes screen compared to XP (which is pretty good too)

And of course, Vista's demands cause my ThinkPads to run a bit hotter, but not alarmingly so.

Usually if you get a BSOD, it's somehow hardware related. If you could give us what the error was it would be easier to help you. I would probably start with 0x000....

Your problem is probably due to a driver issue.

Look around on the Microsoft site for Desktop Search V3. V4 is also coming soon as well. Look for the XP version. Mine came with Automatic Updates at one point, but it was withdrawn from there.

Well, this might almost be thread hijacking (apologies!) but:

Is "Desktop Search" the thingy that eliminates the ability to Search for computers? (That's a big deal for me here at work, where we have thousands of computers in our domains). Seems to me I installed something a while back and uninstalled it for this reason. I've not even installed it on all the home machines, despite Micro$oft Update recommending it.

Hmm ... I'll have to experiment with splitting off posts to new threads.

If (in XP) you run Search from the Start button, and then pull the left elevator bar to the bottom, you see Search Companion. That is the old search and still lets you search for whatever.

In Vista, you can run Search from the Start button, and then pull down Advanced Search. I think that works as well.

Well, I'm sure you've seen the SP1 thread on the T6x forum where these BSODs have been attributed to driver issues with Vista. If you tried to update Vista through WU or MSU, it probably wouldn't let you. Did you download SP1 manually and do a manual update?

Hmm That's strange. this is the problem, I updated to SP1 through Windows Update. In my case, Windows Service Pack showed up. So I didn't do manual update or to enforce update manually.
