T42 noticable speed difference 1.6 & 1.7?

#1 Post by lemmerdeur » Fri Apr 18, 2008 2:30 pm

I have 2 T42, one T42 (2373-4WU)with a 1.7 CPU (SL7EP M 735)and 1.5Gb memory and oneT42p (2373-HVU) that should have 1.8 CPU but has a 1.6 CPU instead(SL7EG M725) and 1.5Gb memory. The t42 is much faster than the T42P. What could be the reason? Both are running XP pro. I don't think the difference of CPU would be noticeable.

What hard drives are in the 2 thinkpads?
Could be many things, hard drive, xp problems, drivers, dma vs pio etc.
You can try putting the T42 drive in the 42p temporarily to narrow down the problem.
Also, run the benchmark test in PC Doctor and make a apples to apples comparison...

There should not be much difference between these two if you look at just the processor. Try swapping the harddrives to see if the lagging is from what is loaded on the HDD.

I did swapped the HDD and it is the same, T42 fast and T42p slow. I was wondering if the CPU could br the problem, when I go to device manager, T42 is CPU 1.70GHZ 1.60GHZ 1536 MB Ram and the T42p is CPU 1.6GHZ 592MHZ 1536MB ram. Why not 1.6 1.6?

Is your CPU set to maximum performance in BIOS on the "lagging" T42p?

I don't know, how would I do that?

Press F1 while booting to enter BIOS. Choose "config". Choose "power". It's all there. Save the settings of your preference by pressing F10 and exit BIOS.

You may learn to know the BIOS settings/options through the BIOS simulator. No danger about making mistakes there...

Looks like your T42P processor is set to power saving, thus the slower processor speed. Is there a green battery just left of the task bar? Pick the battery with the left mouse button and you should see many options, at the top will be "Super Power Saver" and the next will be "Maximum Performance" select Max performance and your system should be running better. The T42P should also go into Max performance if the AC adapter is plugged in.

Johan, very nice catch! I never knew such a utility existed. Here is a link for *all* thinkpads!

Thanks a lot, gator, but as well as the remaining around 95 % of my accumulated ThinkPad knowledge, I also picked up this piece of interesting information - guess where? Yeps... of course right here! Without this (outstanding!) forum, I would be.. well, a practically ThinkPad-nobrain :-(

Sharing is the keyword around here :!: Which so many mature and knowledgeable and highly helpful members do every day - to a fantastic extent! Which this forum is such a nice place to hang out! And thank you - all! - for supporting it all that you do.

Best regards,

Johan

So right, Johan - when I first bought my T23, I signed up for the forum. After a while, I was looking to buy a Dell or a HP, which were significantly cheaper than Thinkpads, but...
When you have a problem with a Dell or an HP, even minor problem - there's nowhere you can look for the solution - it's as if your support is limited to idiots working at those support services (no offense - 99% of these people are just plain stupid).
When you buy a Thinkpad, you have a lifetime support, and that's what counts - after a while I was repairing all my friends' Thinkpads and whenever a person asks me which laptop should they buy - I just say: "If you're smart, buy a Thinkpad!".
This forum rules big time! If it was shut down (God forbid), I would probably be very depressed, as if I've lost one of my dearest friends...

I've owned my T42 for a relatively short space of time but in that "space" I've found that members of this forum have been willing to give of their experience, even at a financial negative.

At least in the UK.

This has had an influence on my decision as what to replace my wife's ageing Omnibook XE2 with. The XE2 was always a poor computer in terms of specification and its potential. But, it has performed well beyond its remit and I have no complaints about it at all. It did what it claimed to do.

The replacement for it will, most likely, be a ThinkPad T4* series machine. Not, simply because I have one already and some worthwhile components to share, but because this forum provides an incredible amount of information to make that choice a viable alternative to buying a "supermarket special" rather than an older, but better supported product.

This forum is much valued, and so are the products it attempts to support, and it does so to a remarkable degree.

Because of the integrity of this forum my next machine will be a ThinkPad. It may be an elderly model at this time, but it may be a newer incarnation in the distant future.

Well done thinkpads.com.

You have a loyal fan.

Dell's website has a forum with lots of useful info and I've gotten excellent help there, although this Thinkpad forum is clearly more fun.
