NTLDR is missing

#1 Post by vma2408 » Fri Apr 18, 2008 3:02 pm

I'm trying to install 2000-Pro :? on my T42 (which previously had XP-Pro installed), using a clean HDD. The installation goes well, until reboot, when I get the message:

NTLDR is missing
Press any key to restart

Various causes are listed in http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm, but I can't see anything there which seems to fit. NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM are present on the new HDD; in fact, this boots OK on my Tosh Sat Pro 4600. Could it be that the T42's BIOS is somehow set up for XP (would surprise me) or is the HDD (both Toshiba) the wrong type - the origional is an MK4026GAX (40GB) and the new one is an MK4025GAS (also 40GB)? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

If you're installing from OEM IBM disks use the PC-Doctor utility to perform a full HDD erase.

After that all should go smooth.

Please report on progress or lack thereof.

Good luck.

Well, I downloaded PC-Doctor v5 from the Levono site and installed it, but can't find any reference to erasing an HDD. Perhaps it's the wrong version, or do I need an extension/add-on? Any additional tips? Thanks.

There should be "utility" section there with this option...

Hitachi Drive Fitness Test has something to wipe the drive with. The Feature Tool is a good download too.

I think that Hitachi's DFT program will only erase a supported Hitachi/IBM disk drive... (memory is hazy on this at the moment). In either case, PC Doctor for DOS is what you need. When the system is booted with the floppy disk set or CD, then select the Utility header and there should be a a Full Erase Hard Drive selection.

You are right ray but weren't they using mainly Hitachi drives in T42's. I guess the OP could have changed it. Anyway PC Doctorwill do the trick too.

Many thanks to all of you :thumbs-UP: , the answer did lie in PC-Doc for DOS. 2000-Pro is now up and running - just have to spend a couple of days installing the necessary drivers.

Once again, many thanks.
