WinXP SP3 just ate my T61!

#1 Post by trosaire » Sat Apr 19, 2008 3:46 am

Hi,
My ThinkPad T61 just got nailed by a bug in Windows XP Service Pack 3. I'm getting a "Stop: c0000139 {Entry not found}" error message that recycles until I turn my computer off. I've checked out Microsoft Technet and several other forum and have learned that this is a well-known problem. The usual solution given is to boot up using the Windows XP CD and use the repair option to copy GDI32.dll from one folder to another (from c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\gdi32.dll to c:\windows\system32\gdi32.dll).

The problem is that the WinXP CD won't recognize my hard disk because SP3 has eaten [or ignores] my SATA drivers. Not only won't the WinXP CD boot, but I can't find a way to get to a command line to fix everything manually. I've been afraid to use ThinkPad's "restore to factory default" because--if it even works in this situation--it might also remove my hard disk partitions, thus making it impossible to restore from my last backup.

I plead temporary insanity for having installed a pre-release of SP3 on my machine in the first place. somehow, I just didn't get that this was an "RC" version [albeit, a late version; I downloaded it from Microsoft's site yesterday afternoon]. I'm so angry at Microsoft for letting this software out of the barn.

Questions:

1. Has anyone come up with a solution to the "SP3 & missing SATA drivers" problem?

2. If needed, where can I get new drivers for my T61's 100 Gb SATA hard disk? I'm assuming it's a Western Digital, but I could be wrong about this.

You help and advice will be very appreciated.

IIRC you have to go into the BIOS and set SATA to 'compatible' or something like that. Then it will recognize the SATA HD again.

Officially, SP3 has not been released yet, however you can download the beta or release candidate versions...but have your restore media standing by; you might need it.

Crazy that MS doesn't mention the fact that this is a 'beta' anywhere on the page I quoted . . . That's almost not fair!

Not fair? Hello, we are taking about Microsoft LOL  .
That link is just for the document talking about SP3, if you check the copyright, it is dated 2007
If you are feeling the need to kill an afternoon or two, you can get SP3 RC2 from here (Warning: may cause issues with your computer!).

I don’t recall the exact number of updates and fixes that have been released since SP2 was released, perhaps 80+, I can see why even a release candidate version would be tempting, however, IMHO I would wait till the final version is released (perhaps even wait after for all the bugs to get smoothed out)

The "not fair" line was mostly bait. And now I see that this is an 'overview' of the service pack, not the pack itself (duh!). Finally, I don't have the kind of time to mess with this, so I haven't. Which begs the question: what the heck am I doing responding to this?!
