External Case for T42 CD/DVD Burner

#1 Post by fritz_the_blank » Sat Apr 19, 2008 9:43 pm

Hello and thank you for reading my post.

I recently purchased an X61, and I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for an external case that would accommodate the CD/DVD writer from my T42 so that I could use it with my X61. Ideally, I would prefer something very slim and not overly expensive.

Will any 5.25 IDE interface case work or do I need something special?

Thank you!

There was an external Ultrabay2000 case to USB for Ultrabay2000 drives. But I haven't seen one for Ultrabay Slim. We are using the external USB clamshell drives or 3rd party USB case for standard tray drives.

Thank you for your response. Do you think that the case you link to will work with my IBM CD/DVD burner?

They work with an Ultrabay2000 drive after you strip off the rails and connector piece. But I would just buy a standard drive with a rectangular faceplate.

Thank you for the advice; I am likely to do that.

If anyone knows of a USB or Firewire case that will work with my drive, please let me know.

There's an ultrabay slim to ultrabay 2000 adapter. This takes the ultrabay slim drive from your T42 and lets you plug it into the USB ultrabay 2000 drive bay. The cost of the adapter plus bay would likely be more than the cost of a USB DVD burner, though.

Wouldn't you know it! I saw a slim drive case at Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817387028) , but I didn't know if it would work without modification.

The external USB Ultrabay2000 case we have is made for USB1.1. I don't remember whether a USB2.0 version was made?

The later external clam shell drives support USB2.0.

No, I don't think this is what you're looking for - it's a regular external USB drive case.

PCMCIA or USB 1.1 - don't know if you need (or if they will have) drivers for XP/Vista.

Thank you for writing.

What I am trying to do is to use the CD/DVD burner that came with my now defunct T42 with my new X61. As there is no slim bay, or any bay, for the X61, I was thinking of purchasing a USB enclosure that would work with my still working CD/DVD burner.

I think that the links that you showed me allow you to use a slim bay device in a regular bay.

Even a cable that would allow me to user the burner externally would be fine.

SKtn77a showed the correct components to use your Ultrabay Slim drive externally with the X61. But it will be a USB1.1 connection.

With that Newegg enclosure, you will need a standard 12.7mm drive. Ultrabay Slim (9.5mm) and Ultrabay Enhanced (12.7mm) drives use a different connector on the back and will not fit these after market enclosures. An Ultrabay2000 drive after removing the caddy pieces will fit these enclosures.

Thank you once again to all for stopping me from purchasing something that won't work.

I guess that I'll just keep the IBM CD/DVD burner in my Ultrabase and purchase stand alone player.

Best,

Oh dear!!! Expensive is right!!!

Based on the excellent advice that I've received above, I play on keeping my IBM burner in the Xdock and will purchase an external CD / DVD player.

Thanks again to all for your posts.
