T43 won't come back from stand-by mode

#1 Post by ulrich.von.lich » Sun Apr 20, 2008 5:32 am

Ok, I've been experiencing this for a few weeks. Please help me determine if it's a software or hardware problem.

My T43 starts to hang occasionally after coming back from Stand-By mode. The wallpaper is still there and I can move the mouse but pressing alt+ctrl+del won't bring on the login window.

First I thought it's the mobo flex but again the laptop has never shut itself down. It just hangs there and I have to press the power-off button to restart it. Then it will boot normally and continue to work as if nothing had happened.

Could it be a mobo issue? Or could it be some software that prevents windows from waking up?

Any thought is greatly appreciated!

Best Regards,
Tony

Reinstall all the power related drivers. Try with only one stick of memory. Remove all the communication cards and reinstall one by one.

Will do.

Should I also reinstall the video driver?

Thanks!

I have no idea. Generally the video drivers on IBM/Lenovo website had been pretty stable for me. You can try the WinXP video driver.

Ulrich,

I had a couple of questions before I suggest anything.

1) You said, you have been experiencing this for a few weeks.
Did you do a system update or driver update around that time?

2) Note the time of next hangup. After system reboot, go to
event viewer (Right click My Computer, select Manage and expand
the Event Viewer option). Select Application and System to see
what entries are listed with a red x around the time your system
hung. Double click those entries to report their source and cause.

pointfielder,

No I didn't use system update around the time the problem started. I don't usually install new drivers while the old ones are still working. So it's been like 6 months I think. But, I do have to install/uninstall application programs occasionally. Maybe some of them messed up the registry?

I checked the Event Viewer but there isn't any error (red x) around the time my system hung. I don't get it at all.

I'm quite busy at the moment but once I have some time I'll try to identify the problem by removing hardware components or doing a fresh windows install. For the moment I think I'll have to leave my T43 running 24/7.

Thanks again for your inputs!
