Dead T42 - random black screen lockup

#1 Post by KillaByte » Thu Dec 09, 2004 1:35 pm

[censored] - my T42 died.

At random intervals the screen just turns black and all disk activity stops. The device also doesn't respond to any of the Fn-combinations (like Fn+F4).

The service guy told me that they will swap the system board. No problem with that. The bad part: system boards seem to be out of stock here in Germany. Now I have to wait until one gets available. This sucks because I got on-site-service but that doesn't help to get my thinkpad fixed fast in this special case :(

I really start to think that I ran out of luck with this one. First the Multiburner died, now the system board. Well - let's see what the future brings...

WTF?!

Yesterday a IBM service rep called me and told me that there are no system boards on stock in *whole Europe* until 11.01.2005

How can this happen?
I'm actually thinking about calling them and asking for a memory key or something for compensation. I don't think that this is how they can handle customers who paid about a hundred extra bucks for on-site service because they don't want to have to wait too long for their thinkpads to get fixed...

UPDATE:
As it turns out, this seems to be no vendor-specific bug. A friend of mine owns a Acer laptop which had exactly the same symptoms. His system board was exchanged, too. Does anyone know if this is a problem of e.g. the chipset?

Well - let's add another reply to this monologue ;)

After writing SJP (via this link) my case got assigned to a guy from IBM Germany who granted me 100 euro (about 135 USD) for compensation. Merry Christmas :D

Cool - did your machine show the same symptoms?
