Help with new T42 install --- major issues

#1 Post by damascus » Sun Apr 20, 2008 2:34 pm

Hi everyone. I have a t42. I did a fresh install of XP Pro (original version), using an XP Po cd I have. After the install I noticed most all devices (video card, network card, ethernet card, etc) had not installed. I then used a PMCIA Linksys card to connect to internet and install all device drivers for T42 on IBM's web site. Still yellow exclamation marks on devices. I then installed XP pro svc pk2. Still, all devices have yellow exclamation marks on them in dev mgr

Again, I have installed all driver installs from IBM's site, and svc pk 2 and do not know how to get device drivers installed

PS: I do not have the orig install disks or the restore partition.

Help

Installing the drivers is not the end of the process, you have to unpack them from appropriate directories, for ethernet it would be something like C>Drivers>win>ethernet.

Good luck and let us know.

Understood. I've already run them from their respective directories. All devices stay in "other devices" with yellow exclamations:

Ethernet
multimedia audio controller
network controller
pci modem
unknown device
video controller

See the guide How To Fresh Install Windows XP Pro Without A Recovery CD - some of the steps therein may help you. Alternatively, search this forum for "fresh install". Use the (newer) Lenovo System Update in place of the "Software Installer" mentioned in the guide (an earlier version of System Update) mentioned in the guide.

Ethernet folder has apps and pro100 and pro1000. I don't get it. Not too intuitive

Well, you seem to have a good bit of work ahead of you, if you want to follow this route, but don't know how (and also if you don't know how to find the answer in this forum, after searching?).

If I were you, I would far rather spend the $10-20 required to get a set of IBM Rescue and Recovery CD's e.g. via the Marketplace in this forum. I have a DVD myself with images (ISO's) of all the 7 CD's, but as you are in the US and I am in Denmark, it is not the best solution to offer to send a copy of this to you, although I would be happy to help. Therefore, consider posting a "WTB" (Want To Buy) a set of recovery CD's in the Marketplace here. See the thread WTB: T41 XP Pro Recovery CD.

There are some alternative tools on eBay - such as this - but I am uncertain if they will restore the ThinkVantage "Rescue & Recovery" Service Partition on your T42, so I would rather recommend get a set of dedicated IBM CD's.

Finding the right drivers in that folder suite can be rather difficult. One has to do it trial and error. One solution is to download and install the Lenovo System Update. It will auto-detect your machine and then suggestion what you need to install after polling your hardware.

That saves a lot of manual work.

Look for anything that says "setup"...

If you have a T42, it should be pro1000.

Did you install the chipset driver? This helps identify unknown hardware that's linked to the southbridge (I/O controller hub) eg network, modem, etc and allows selection of the correct driver.
