frustrating router issue

#1 Post by Marin85 » Mon Apr 21, 2008 4:58 am

I have a Zynos router Zyxel P660HW-T7C (provided by my IPS) that we are connected at home to through WLAN. If my mate connects to the router while I´m connected, my connection drops and I have to reconnect and vica versa. We tried everything: using the connection manager provided by our ISP (some kind of stupid bloatware that doesn´t solve the problem), changing wifi cards, changing the channel (currently channel 13, the wifi networks in the surrounding goes up to 11, so I wanted to make sure it´s not due to any kind of stupid interference etc.), different wireless protections and I don´t believe someone is poisoning our network. A few details:
1. I´m using uTorrent and I had to forward a port in NAT (range 50k) as well as in the router firewall to make it run properly.
2. We are currently using WEP encryption as changing the encryption method didn´t seem to help any further.
3. It seems not to be correlated with whether uTorrent is in use or not, and it also happens during ftp downloading or updating (I don´t browse that much).
4. My mate doesn´t use any torrent client.
5. I also use skype and icq (no idea if this is somehow related).
6. I have Vista business x86 OS and he has XPP OS.
7. There is a third laptop (my grandma´s) with wired connection to the router, but it´s most of the time offline anyway.
8. Installing, Uninstalling or reinstalling AC doesn´t solve the problem (so, people, it´s not up to AC ;) )
9. Frequency: quite often, but not always!
10. No firmware updates available for now.

Any help or insights what could have gone wrong or any hints would be greatly appreciated!

This happens on my Netopia "b" router. I don't often have another wireless computer around, so I don't bother with it. However, it does not play with my new Vista machine, so I am going to upgrade it to a "g" and see what happens. ... JDH

It sounds like the NAT is not working properly.

Make sure you have the latest Firmware for your router.
That model seems to be a real POS.

Also, if there is any software installed by your ISP, try to inactivate/delete that and let Windows manage your connection.

I am not sure how to check for certain, but I think NAT is working on my router. I always get different IP addresses for different machines, and my VMWare machines (Desktop/Bridged) get their own IP's as well.

I don't have MAC filtering on (I used to, but disabled it).

I recall (memory fades over time) that it used to work at one point, so it may be a firmware issue.

I had to replace my Print Server to get to Vista, so I may as well move on to a faster wireless router (as the current one for one reason or another) won't play with my Vista machine.

Just to follow up on this: I replaced my Netopia B router (only one connection allowed, and does not work for my Vista machine) with a Netopia G router. Multiple connections work just fine and the Vista machine plays with it just fine. Large file transfers between machines are faster now as a bonus. ... JDH
