Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG and 2915ABG and Lucent AP-1000
Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG and 2915ABG and Lucent AP-1000
Hi again!
I have a very annoying problem with these Mini-PCI adapters -- the IBM ones, not generic cards, both running on ThinkPad T43s.
When I connect to my access point (a Lucent Technologies AP-1000 with a WaveLAN silver card on it and WEP disabled --I usually run authpf to allow ssh authentication on this network but I have disabled security for testing this problem--) the connection is lost after a few seconds (~ eight seconds). If I walk away of the access point (about ten meters away from it) all is fine. In fact, the connection is very reliable then. It looks like a latency problem (are my laptops speaking so fast to this old but nice wireless bridge?)
Has someone observed this behavior? I am running OpenBSD, so these machines are using the iwi(4) driver. I would like to know if it happens to other people that has access to these old Lucent devices. If it happens with other drivers (e.g., to people running Microsoft Windows) it will be a firmware problem, if not, we should look for a fix for it.
No need to say it, these laptops are working fine when connected to other access points.

Try upgrading your firmware on your router. You said your laptops have no problem connecting to other access points. Try changing Wireless Channels, for some reason my laptop has problem connecting to certain access points... I had to change my Wireless Channel settings because my connection would connect then disconnect (highly annoying). If not power cycle your router/modem.sobrado wrote:Hi again!

The AP-1000 has the latest firmware on it (AP functions firmware variant 1 version 8.42) and on its PCMCIA wireless adapter (primary functions firmware variant 1 version 4.00, and station functions firmware variant 1 version 8.72). I usually try to stay up to date on firmware.ResidentG33k wrote:Try upgrading your firmware on your router. You said your laptops have no problem connecting to other access points. There are no other access points using the same channel in the neighborhood. On the other hand this AP fails consistently after sending traffic for a few seconds, not randomly as we would expect from noise in the communication channel. However, it works nicely if I try to connect to it from other rooms.

Try changing Routers. I use a Linksys WRT54 Version 2, it runs really solid, it may be an older router but I'm not upgrading for a reason, the Version 8 routers have Wireless Problems. Upgrade to another brand... or Change the antennas on yours.
My router allows me to change how much OUTPUT dB power it transmits with the %, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% as well as Decibel power too. I've changed the channel on my Router because Wireless Interferance is everywhere, it doesnt have to be be just WIFI interferance either. Cellphone, Cordless Phone, Wireless Xbox 360, Microwaves and much more too. You'd be surprised whats capable at operating at the 2.4 band even your neighbors could be running a radio station for all you know
Minor setting changes in your router could help your computer and your router connect better.

I wonder if your router is possibly overloading your wireless card(s)? Try reducing the power output and see if the problems go away. Have you tried putting the router in a different room and had the same problem?
